TRAX train collides with car near University of Utah; no injuries

A Utah Transit Authority TRAX train collided with a car near the University of Utah on Friday afternoon, but no one was injured.

University of Utah police Lt. Arbon Nordgran said that at about 3:15 p.m. a man in his mid-30s was driving his Honda Accord south into the intersection of Wasatch Drive and Mario Capecchi Drive.

The driver was crossing the intersection at "a slow speed" when he realized a train was coming, Nordgran said.

The driver did not see the flashing lights, Nordgran said. And once the driver saw the train, he tried to back up, but it was too late.

"The train clipped him," Nordgran said, adding that the front left bumper of the car was torn but still attached to the car.

UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said delays lasted about 30 minutes.

Carpenter said the intersection has flashing lights but no crossing arms.
