Jan Wahl Entertainment Report: Mirror Mirror

Everything else is going smoothly in this re-telling of the Snow White tale: Julia Roberts is perfect as the mean queen, Nathan Lane milking every laugh possible as her servant, hunky Armie Hammer as a hunky prince, with some nice character players, cinematography, wild costumes, and special effects.

?
But, none of that can save the film because it is Snow White herself who causes a snowstorm of bad, empty, boring acting. We?re talking wooden. They tell us Lily Collins is a breakout star ? then break out of the lack of energy. We should root for or at least be interested in this title character, instead her valley girl line readings zaps the fun from what should be a good time, light hearted movie. Little girls will still go for it, of course but what a waste that they end up with a tired Kardashian instead of a brave princess.

One half of a hat, barely a visor, for the costumes and Roberts.

See Right Now: ?Jiro Who Dreams of Sushi,? ?Delicacy,? ?House of Pleasures,? ?The Artist? and ?Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.?

Home Viewing/DVD: ?A Dangerous Method,? ?Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,? ?The Adventures of Tintin,? ?Hugo,? ?My Week with Marilyn? and ?Moneyball.?

Novel excavation technique attributes prior damage to land clearing and overfishing

The decline of Caribbean coral reefs has been linked to the recent effects of human-induced climate change. However, new research led by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego suggests an even earlier cause. The bad news humans are still to blame. The good news relatively simple policy changes can hinder further coral reef decline.

Employing a novel excavation technique to reconstruct the timeline of historical change in coral reefs located on the Caribbean side of Panama, a team of scientists led by Scripps alumna Katie Cramer and current Scripps Professor of Oceanography and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Emeritus Staff Scientist Jeremy Jackson has determined that damage to coral reefs from land clearing and overfishing pre-dates damage caused by anthropogenic climate change by at least decades.

"This study is the first to quantitatively show that the cumulative effects of deforestation and possibly overfishing were degrading Caribbean coral and molluscan communities long before climate change impacts began to really devastate reefs," said lead author Cramer, currently based at the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network at the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Coral reefs have suffered alarmingly since the 1980s due to coral bleaching and coral disease, thought to stem from the warming of the oceans due to anthropogenic, or human-induced, climate change. However, until recently, the impact of prior human activities on Caribbean coral reefs had not been studied with experimental techniques.

Historical records and qualitative surveys provide hints that declines in corals in some parts of the Caribbean occurred as far back as the early 1900s after coastal lands began to be cleared to make way for plantations. However, the current study is the first to quantify the changes that reef corals and mollusks have undergone as a result of long-term stress caused by the deposition of silt, nutrients, and pollution onto coral reefs from land clearing and the depletion of reef fish that prevent algae from overtaking reefs.

"Because researchers did not really begin to study Caribbean reefs in detail until the late 1970s, we don't have a clear understanding of why these reefs have changed so dramatically since this time," said Cramer. "So, we set out to reconstruct an older timeline of change on reefs by looking at the remains of past reefs coral skeletons and mollusk shells."

To reconstruct this timeline, the team dug below modern reefs in incremental layers and, using radiocarbon dating of the coral skeletons they found, linked fluctuations in the types and numbers of coral and mollusks over time to historical records of land clearing. Changes in the relative numbers of these various species represent clear indicators of the overall health of the coral reef.

The team also improved upon the standard technique of taking long, narrow core samples of coral fossils that cannot track fluctuations in the numbers of larger species of coral.

"We wanted to look at the whole complement of the coral community," said Cramer.

To catalog the relative numbers of dozens of coral and molluscan species, the researchers dug two-foot-wide by three-foot-deep pits into reefs at several coastal lagoon and offshore sites near Bocas del Toro, Panama, that were heavily affected and less affected by land runoff, respectively. At each of these sites they also conducted surveys and recorded the composition of living corals.

"We dug up over a ton of coral rubble and tens of thousands of shells," said Cramer, who led the fieldwork at STRI and likened the laborious experience to doing underwater construction.

Systematically sifting through the coral and shell fossils, the scientists noted several indicators of environmental stress, including a decrease in the overall size of bivalves such as oysters, clams, and scallops, a transition from branching to non-branching species of coral, and large declines in the staghorn coral and the tree oyster, which were once the dominant coral and bivalve on these reefs.

These indicators were observed in layers of the excavated pits at coastal lagoon sites that were dated before 1960 and as far back as the 1800s, corresponding to a period of extensive deforestation in the Bocas del Toro region. Similar evidence of environmental stress at offshore sites was dated after 1960, indicating that the negative impacts of land clearing have more recently begun to affect reefs further offshore.

With the decline of the branching coral species, the reefs now have fewer nooks and crannies that are used as habitat for reef fish and other organisms. Also, the non-branching species that have taken their place grow at a much slower rate. "Consequently, there is less of a chance that the reefs will be able to keep up with sea level rise from climate change," said Cramer.

"Because the governments of the world have yet to undertake any meaningful efforts to mitigate climate change, it is of the utmost importance that locally caused stressors to reefs such as overfishing and deforestation are minimized," said Cramer. "Advocating for more intelligent use of land as well as implementing sustainable fisheries management, those are things that can be done right now."

The research team, which also includes Jill Leonard-Pingel of Scripps, Thomas Guilderson of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Christopher Angioletti, will publish its findings in the April issue of Ecology Letters. An early online version has been released today.

This research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution, the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps, the UC San Diego Academic Senate, and the PADI Foundation's Project AWARE.

Opinions of a Moody Mama: Imperial Toy Review

"At Imperial, our goal is not only to manufacture and sell innovative and creative toys, it is to sell and manufacture them responsibly. We are committed to best practices in sustaining the environment, and manufacturing safe products."

Today I am excited to tell you about some really cool products that I had the opportunity to review. Imperial Toy sent my family an amazing package including a Super Miracle Bubbles Glow Fusion Hi-Beam Illuminator Bubble Blaster with Glow Fusion Bubble Solution, a Bubble Turbine, a KAOS Cyclops Water Balloon Launcher, and KAOS Tie Not Filler with 50 Water Bombs. You can see it all pictured below.

Now that Spring is officially here, my family is spending more and more time outdoors. This week, we have had so much fun playing with all of the bubbles and water balloons! First, I want to tell you about the Super Miracle Bubbles Glow Fusion Hi-Beam Illuminator. This thing is really awesome! To make the bubbles glow, all you need to do is mix the solution and activators for 30 seconds. Then just attach the Hi-Beam Illuminator and hold down the trigger and watch the glowing bubbles appear! So much fun!

Here is a video about the Glow Fusion Bubble Solution:

The Bubble Turbine was also lots of fun! This toy makes some of the biggest bubbles that I have ever seen! The Bubble Turbine is battery operated and was extremely easy for my son to use.

The KAOS Tie Not Filler is a super easy way to fill water balloons. You can fill your balloon and you do not have to worry with trying to tie that tiny knot at the end. Very cool!

The KAOS Cyclops Water Balloon Launcher is a one handed water balloon launcher. This launcher can heave water balloons farther than I ever imagined! My son and husband played with this item while I observed from afar... or so I thought! My husband nailed me with a water balloon from across the yard! I can only imagine the fun that will be had with this toy as we move into the summer!

I would highly recommend that you check out the Imperial Toy website to see all of the awesome products available. It is also a great idea to follow Imperial Toy on Facebook so that you can be among the first to know about all of the new products that are coming out.

Disclosure: This review was made possible by Mom Spark Media. Thoughts are my own.

Boy beaten near Paris Jewish school amid tensions

(AP) ? A 12-year-old boy was beaten outside his Jewish school in Paris by youths reciting anti-Semitic slogans, school officials said, amid high security and tensions in France following killings of Jewish children and a rabbi last week.

The boy did not suffer serious injuries.

Both the school shooting and this week's beating involved the Ozar Hatorah network of Jewish schools.

Emotions have been raw in France, especially within the half-million-strong Jewish community, since a gunman shot a rabbi and his two sons, 3 and 5 years old, and the 8-year-old daughter of the principal of the Ozar Hatorah School in the southern city of Toulouse on March 19.

A radical Muslim gunman named Mohamed Merah claimed responsibility for that attack and killing three French paratroopers, before he was shot to death by police.

The 12-year-old boy was hit and punched in the back of his head Monday afternoon as he left the Ozar Hatorah School in southeast Paris, the school's human resources director, Katia Normal, said Tuesday. She said the aggressors were two boys a couple of years older than the victim who recited anti-Semitic slogans.

It happened about 100 meters from the entrance and therefore out of sight of the police officers guarding the school.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered security increased at Jewish and Muslim schools and synagogues after last week's shooting.

An official with the Paris police said the school reported Monday's incident but did not elaborate on what happened because it involves a minor.

Jean-Paul Amoyelle, president of the Ozar Hatorah network in France, lamented Monday's beating.

"There was a feeling of solidarity for our schools after this drama (in Toulouse)," he told The Associated Press. "Now I fear that this has provoked a hostile reaction, shown by the attitude of these boys who called him dirty Jew and beat him up."

"We have to be vigilant, because this could lead to more aggression," he said.

France is deep in an election campaign that has touched on questions about the French identity. Jews are shaken by last week's killings, and France's large Islamic community ? estimated at 5 million ? fears a backlash because the killer was Muslim.

Sarkozy and other politicians have called for unity and tolerance.

Merah's shadow hung over a ceremony Tuesday commemorating a somber anniversary: 70 years since Nazi-occupied France deported its first convoy of Jews and others to concentration camps during World War II.

Famed Nazi hunter Serge Klarsfeld and a French government minister were among those present at the ceremony in the Paris suburb of Drancy. It honored the 1,112 Jews sent March 27, 1942 from Drancy to the camps at Auschwitz. Only 19 survived.

Authorites went onto send 76,000 people from France to Nazi camps, most from Drancy. Most died.

"The anti-Jewish hate that led these tens of thousands of victims to an atrocious death remains, alas, persistent and alive, even if it has changed its vector and Hitlerian ideology has been substituted by the most extremist fringe of Islam," Klarsfeld said.

Junior defense minister Marc Laffineur, speaking at the ceremony, said, "In attacking, with incredible cruelty, children and soldiers of the nation, Mohamed Merah was targeting each one of us."

Referring to France's motto, he said Merah targeted "the heart of all those who demand liberty, equality and fraternity."

Black Marriage Day excludes many black families | TOUCH 106.1 FM

Today, Sunday, March 25th, is Black Marriage Day. This national event, sponsored by the Wedded Bliss Foundation, encourages black marriage of black people in black communities. It?s a celebration of traditional black matrimony: black-on-black, male-female, legally recognized love. Black Marriage Day discourages cohabitation and lauds two parent families as a gift to children. This celebration of wedded bliss, however, leaves many black families behind.

With its focus on legally-recognized marriage, Black Marriage Day excludes other committed relationships and non-traditional marriage, at a time in this country when marriage rates are on a steep decline. The Pew Research Center analyzed census statistics and found that just 51 percent of adults 18 plus are married ? on the last census in 2000 57% of adults were married.

Almost all Black Marriage Day literature addresses different sex couples, with words and pictures that celebrate the sanctity of the traditional family. Without even announcing it, the holiday institutes a ?straights only? rule. Even in states like Massachusetts and New York that do have gay marriage, there is scant recognition of anything resembling ?Black Gay Marriage Day.? Although our LGBT brothers and sisters cannot marry in most states, they form loving relationships without marriage.

It is entirely possible?and completely overlooked?to have commitment and stability outside of law. Look at the histories of our ancestors who were forbidden to marry. They jumped brooms, tied hands, or just moved into a new house to symbolize commitment. They created families however they could, for however long they could. Yes, these relations were controlled by other people more powerful, but it is completely shortsighted to say that ?the legal way is the only way.?

The focus on black married couples makes no room for interracial relationships, either. Regardless of one?s opinion of racial intermixture, Black Marriage Day fails to legitimate partnership with people from other racial groups. Yes, hundreds of articles have been written on gender disparities in marriage and dating between black men and black women. That argument is nothing new: when black women marry ?down,? and black men marry ?out,? it results in a low black-black marriage rate. What?s the result? Fewer black people marry each other, which results in intensified efforts to promote Black Marriage. But even when black people marry outside their own race, creating a two-parent, legally wedded family, it remains outside the scope of consideration.

Black Marriage Day also dismisses the inherent value of single parents. If the stated focus of Black Marriage Day is the celebration of the two parent, married, heterosexual family unit, this leaves out single black parents of all persuasions. It seems as if the contributions of single parents are not recognized as valuable, and marriage would cure their defective parenting. Despite their parenting skills or expertise with children, their position as head of house conflicts with the traditional ideal.

How could Black Marriage Day be more productive and less exclusionary? It should celebrate black families in general, which would include a wide diversity of arrangements: interracial families, LGBT families, single parent households and yes, traditional families. This means that black marriage is one of many options for healthy, black families. A Black Family Day, as opposed to a Black Marriage Day, says that all families deserve recognition and praise.

Commitment does not automatically equal marriage, and marriage does not automatically equal stability. To marriage promoters, becoming husbands and wives is the only route to the supposed benefits reserved for the institution: increased income, better children, and life improvements. It is under-inclusive to say that unmarried people cannot enjoy the same quality of life. Instead, looking only to marriage is a proxy, or a nostalgic shorthand, for a stable, perfect family. But in searching for the perfect picture, Black Marriage Day overlooks the beautiful colors that paint a realistic picture of actual, and not fantasized, family life.

Major ISPs agree to FCC's code of conduct on botnets, DNS attacks

Image
The FCC's campaign to secure the internet gained new momentum last week, when a group of major ISPs signed on to a new code of conduct aimed at mitigating cybercrime. Adopted by the FCC's Communications, Security, Reliability and Interoperability Council (CSRIC), the new code targets three main security threats: botnets, DNS attacks and internet route hijacking. The Anti-Bot Code of Conduct invites ISPs to adopt sharper detection methods, and to notify and assist consumers whenever their computers are infected. The DNS code, meanwhile, offers a list of best practices by which ISPs can tighten security. Though it doesn't call for a full adoption of DNSSEC technology, the guidelines do represent a "first step" toward implementation, allowing web users to verify the authenticity of their online destinations. As for internet route attacks, the CSRIC calls for a similarly collective approach, asking ISPs to collaborate on new technologies within an industry-wide framework.

In a statement, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski said that these practices "identify smart, practical, voluntary solutions that will materially improve the cyber security of commercial networks and bolster the broader endeavors of our federal partners." The industry apparently agrees, as heavyweights like AT&T, CenturyLink, Comcast, Cox, Sprint, Time Warner Cable, T-Mobile and Verizon have already signed on. For the FCC's full statement, check out the source link below.

Minnesota Construction Contracts Require One, Two and Ten Year ...

1332637238 36 Minnesota Construction Contracts Require One, Two and Ten Year Warranties

Every contractor who builds, repairs or remodels homes or apartments in Minnesota knows about One, Two, ten.

One: Contractors have to provide at least a one year warranty on materials and workmanship.

Two: Plumbing, electrical and HVAC work require a two-year warranty.

Ten: any major construction defect is covered for ten years.

All this is courtesy of the Housing Statutory Warranties Act, Minnesota Statutes. Nearly all residential construction, repair and improvement work is covered, whether a home, an apartment or a condominium. Install roofing, siding or flooring, a window or a door and you?ve written a one year warranty. Install a water heater, a furnace or a lighting fixture and your warranty runs for two years. on new construction, room additions and conversions, your warranty runs for ten years.

Both the first owner and later owners are covered by the warranty. after being notified of a claim, a contractor has 30 days to do an inspection and make an offer to repair. A contractor who refuses to make good on the warranty will be liable for the cost of repairs and can be found in contempt of court.

Changes

Minnesota?s one, Two, ten law changed in August 2009. Governor Pawlenty signed a bill that affects every home construction and home improvement contract in the state.Minnesota?s statutory warranty now has to be written into your contract ? three paragraphs of very precise language ? one warranty for new construction and a different warranty for repair or home improvement work. A copy of the warranty has to be left with the property owner.

Omit the warranty from a contract and you?ve got trouble: on new construction, leaving the warranty out is considered a false statement and makes the contractor liable for a fine up to $10,000. Leaving the warranty out of a repair or home improvement contract can draw an invitation to discuss your license with the CCLD (Construction Codes and Licensing Division).

Minnesota?s statutory warranty law has a few exceptions. for example, yard improvements such as walkways, walls and fences don?t require a written warranty. the warranty can?t be waived. But there are options if you offer protection underwritten by a Minnesota home warranty company.

A breach of warranty is anything that doesn?t comply with Minnesota?s building code (the IRC). That?s a curious definition. the building code says almost nothing about cosmetic defects or how long materials have to last or water leakage. Those and other performance issues are the most common construction defects. the IRC is concerned primarily with selection of materials and safety, not durability and habitability. Warranty law in most states is based on consumer expectations. Not so in the Gopher State.

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hollywood icon James Cameron has completed his journey to Earth's deepest point.

The director of "Titanic," ''Avatar" and other films used a specially designed submarine to dive nearly seven miles. He spent time exploring and filming the Mariana Trench, about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam, according to members of the National Geographic expedition.

Cameron returned to the surface of the Pacific Ocean on Monday morning local time, Sunday evening on the U.S. East Coast, according to Stephanie Montgomery of the National Geographic Society.

He spent a little more than three hours under water after reaching a depth of 35,756 feet before he began his return to the surface, according to information provided by the expedition team. He had planned to spend up to six hours on the sea floor.

Cameron's return aboard his 12-ton, lime-green sub called Deepsea Challenger was a "faster-than-expected 70-minute ascent," according to National Geographic.

There were no immediate reports regarding Cameron's well-being. A medical team was present when Cameron, 57, emerged from the sub, according to the expedition.

Expedition physician Joe MacInnis told National Geographic News before the journey that recent test dives, including one that went more than five miles deep, had gone well and that he expected Cameron would be fine.

"Jim is going to be a little bit stiff and sore from the cramped position, but he's in really good shape for his age, so I don't expect any problems at all," said MacInnis, a long-time Cameron friend, according to National Geographic.

There was no immediate word on when photographic footage of the journey will be released.

The scale of the trench is hard to grasp ? it's 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and more than a mile deeper than Mount Everest is tall.

"It's really the first time that human eyes have had an opportunity to gaze upon what is a very alien landscape," said Terry Garcia, the National Geographic Society's executive VP for mission programs, via phone from Scotland.

Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh, a U.S. Navy captain, are the only others to reach the spot. They spent about 20 minutes there during their 1960 dive but couldn't see much after their sub kicked up sand from the sea floor.

One of the risks of a dive so deep was extreme water pressure. At 6.8 miles below the surface, the pressure is the equivalent of three SUVs sitting on your toe.

Cameron told The Associated Press in an interview after a 5.1 mile-deep practice run near Papua New Guinea earlier this month that the pressure "is in the back of your mind." The submarine would implode in an instant if it leaked, he said.

But while he was a little apprehensive beforehand, he wasn't scared or nervous while underwater.

"When you are actually on the dive you have to trust the engineering was done right," he said.

The film director has been an oceanography enthusiast since childhood and has made 72 deep-sea submersible dives. Thirty-three of those dives have been to the wreckage of the Titanic, the subject of his 1997 hit film, which is being released in a 3-D version next month.

TRAX train collides with car near University of Utah; no injuries

A Utah Transit Authority TRAX train collided with a car near the University of Utah on Friday afternoon, but no one was injured.

University of Utah police Lt. Arbon Nordgran said that at about 3:15 p.m. a man in his mid-30s was driving his Honda Accord south into the intersection of Wasatch Drive and Mario Capecchi Drive.

The driver was crossing the intersection at "a slow speed" when he realized a train was coming, Nordgran said.

The driver did not see the flashing lights, Nordgran said. And once the driver saw the train, he tried to back up, but it was too late.

"The train clipped him," Nordgran said, adding that the front left bumper of the car was torn but still attached to the car.

UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said delays lasted about 30 minutes.

Carpenter said the intersection has flashing lights but no crossing arms.
