Get your home organized by starting with the end in mind, routine habit

Get your home organized by starting with the end in mind.

Focus on the job through the eyes of yourself, as you imagine you will be feeling, once the job is complete.? Walk into the first room, that you want to get organized, with a pad and pen.? Make a quick sketch of the way you would like the layout of the room to be.? Imagine that there is no clutter, only your furniture, and it?s placed here and here.? Keep in mind the largest piece of furniture is best positioned on the largest area of wall.? Don?t worry if you don?t love your lounge or your book case, we will work on re-decorating later on.? For now, I just want you to picture the room entirely free of clutter, cleaned, and your furniture re-arranged, your room is finally organized.

The middle part to the job, is you De-cluttering the room.? Grab 3 boxes and place a large garbage bag in one.

Keep, Give and Throw are the names of the boxes.? Now we need a pad and pen to make a note of what you want to keep stored in this room.? You don?t need to do this right now.? If you can get up to the 3 boxes for now, you?ve made a start.? If your ready to keep organizing this room, good for you.? In the note pad, list all the items that you will need to store in this room.? Again start with the end in mind and imagine what the scene of this room will look like when it?s finished and organized.? You might be working on the family room and picturing your TV and stand in this corner, with the couch and chairs facing, a coffee table, some side tables, lamps, computer desk with some storage,? and a book case.

Psychotherapists claim that once the clutter is cleared, and their homes are organized, their patients begin to work on other area?s of their lives, that are needing improvement.

Cindy Glovinsky, MSW, a psychotherapist and professional organizer, tells WebMD, ?As people clean up and organize their homes, their energy seems to rise. Once clutter is cleaned up, and their homes are organized, some people begin to work on other issues.? One of her clients, a professor, unhappy with her job, got a better position once the clutter was under control and her home had been organized. Another, so overweight, that she was housebound, joined an on-line self-help group once the clutter was cleared away and her home had been organized.?

There you have it. You pictured how you wanted the room organized.? You made notes about:

  • What needed to be taken out of the room
  • What needed to be in the room
  • Where in the room you wanted it to be placed

Next,? you physically did the hard yards and got the room organized.

  • You de-cluttered the room by sorting all the items into three boxes : give, keep, and throw away.
  • You re-arranged the room and organized your possessions in a way that you loved
  • The rest of the room you have organized in the most functional way, by placing items that are most used in the most accessible area?s and the lessor used items in the harder to reach areas.
