Y Combinator-Backed SimplyInsured Wants To Help Small Businesses Take The Pain Out Of Health Insurance

Screen shot 2013-02-27 at 10.04.33 AMFor small businesses, buying and managing health insurance is a "pain in the buns," to quote my new favorite ad. Not only are its complicated terms, lack of transparency, slow quoting and on-boarding process and paper trail a pain in your buns, but health insurance can be a massive pain in your wallet, to boot. Hidden costs are everywhere. Y Combinator-backed SimplyInsured is launching today with a solution. Founders Vivek Shah and George Huo, who were also both early employees at YC startup Cardpool (which sold to Blackhawk Network in late 2011), have built a simple, online health insurance manager and quote engine for small businesses, which aims to explain in plain English what is or isn't working about your current plan and help you identify hidden costs and cost-savings.

Flash Duel is a fast-paced card game that simulates a 2-D fighting game, a la Street Fighter. Set in the Fantasy Strike universe, which includes the games Yomi and Puzzle Strike, Flash Duel (2nd edition) features the original game plus all of the expansions, offering 20 character choices and several modes of play, ranging from 1vs1, to a solo practice mode, to a team vs. 1 game which even includes an optional traitor variant.

How It Plays
The goal of Flash Duel is to knock your opponent out simply by scoring one hit against them. The first player to win three rounds wins the game. Here?s the basic overview of the 1vs1 game.

Players have five cards in their hands, ranging from 1 to 5 (and five copies of each number are in the deck). At the start of each round, players start at opposite ends of an eighteen-space ?bridge.? Each turn, a player can move, attack, push, or dashing strike by playing numbered cards. To move, you must play a number and move that many space forward or back. When you push, you must be adjacent to your opponent; then you can play a numbered card to move that player that many spaces back. To attack, you can play any number of cards with the same number, but this number has to be the exact distance between you and your opponent. When you attack, the opponent must attempt to block by matching your attack. That is, if you play two 2s, your opponent must play two 2s to block or be knocked out. Since there are only five of each number, playing three of a kind is a guaranteed hit.

Finally, the dashing strike allows you to move by playing a card, then attack as normal. The difference is the opposing player has the option to retreat instead of block by playing a single card and moving that many spaces backwards. However, if your opponent retreats, they must spend their next turn ?recovering? which basically means doing nothing.

At the end of your turn, you draw until you have five cards in your hand.

When a player gets hit, they are knocked out. The round ends, and players reset their positions to start.

Players also have access to three special actions by choosing a character at the start of the game. These actions provide special bonuses or defensive abilities, and each can be used once per round.

The game finishes when a player has won three rounds.

In addition to the 1vs1 mode, the box also includes rules and components for a 2vs2 mode, a cooperative mode, and a cooperative-with-a-traitor mode. Each mode relies on the same basic action structure, but 2vs2 adds more cards in the mix and allows players to help defend each other. Cooperative mode pits multiple players against one player controlling the ?Dragon,? which can take more than one hit in a round, has a bigger hand size, and has some very powerful special abilities. The Traitor mode, only playable with five, makes one player a traitor who can attempt to sabotage his or her team and eventually join forces with the Dragon to defeat the other players.

KO?
Flash Duel is a very simplistic game; simple by design, and in that intent the game has certainly succeeded. It takes about two minutes to explain and about twenty minutes to play a full game of five rounds the first time. But it might just be too simplistic to be anything more than a quick filler game.
There isn?t a whole lot of substance to the game, not a whole lot of strategy. You basically just try to grab a bunch of matching cards and then get in range; it?s almost a guarantee that whoever gets the first attack in is going to win, because even if you block, or retreat from a Dashing Strike, you?re put at an immediate disadvantage. If you block, you have fewer cards to work with on your turn, so good luck with a counter attack. If you retreat, you can?t do anything on your turn, which means that the other player will likely just dashing strike you again and again until your back is against the wall. The result is rounds that will last you about thirty seconds, but not a substantial ?fight.?

The player characters spice things up a little bit, but the powers are pretty limited. They don?t change the overall dynamic of the game; they just give you something a little more interesting to do. Occasionally the powers will save you from demise.

The game is the most fun when you engage in the theme. If you imagine your two fighters squaring off, sizing each other up, advancing, a few preliminary attacks, all the while shouting classic video-game style ?H?yah!? it?s a fairly enjoyable experience. You do have to bring a lot into the game yourself though.

I think the 2vs2 version is a lot more enjoyable, if only because working with another player gives you a few more options. One player can sacrifice him or herself to put the other in a great position to take out the opponents. Players can help defend each other, and the number of cards doubles, so a set of three is no longer a guaranteed kill. The same is true of the Team vs. 1 option. Still, it never really breaks out of the super-simplistic mode, and the game will not really stand up to frequent, repeated plays. The Traitor variant is an interesting thought, but it doesn?t really add enough. I?d personally rather play any number of hidden traitor games than this, if I?m looking for a traitor experience, but for what it's worth, it's there.

To be fair, this game is an intentionally simplified version of Yomi (which I have not played), and it is designed to be extremely fast with limited rules. It seems targeted towards younger gamers, with more cartoonish art, and I could see a couple ten-year-old boys getting into the game. It?s certainly less of a financial commitment than any CCG, and it would be easy and quick enough to whip out during recess or after school or whatever.

The components are reasonable enough. The fighters themselves are simply colored wooden pawns, which works but doesn?t really evoke the theme too well. I suppose it had to be generic considering there are twenty characters to choose from, and it would be a little expensive to have minis for each.

The cardstock is fine though not stellar; the best thing about the components is that it contains all the components necessary ? four small pawns, a large Dragon pawn, tokens to use as coins/markers/points, and a thick playing board ? but it also includes a small deck box that holds all the cards necessary for a 1vs1 game, including an extra set of cards to replace the playing board, about the size of a deck of playing cards, which is great for portability. Given that it is the kind of game you would whip out to play for five minutes while in the doctor?s office waiting room or something like that, this is an excellent inclusion.

All in all, Flash Duel is a nice little box that contains a nice little ?2-D fighting game? that is easy and very fast to play. It?s nothing particularly outstanding or special, but it?s decently enjoyable in a pinch, especially if you have an imagination. If you?re looking for a substantial card game to represent a 2-D fighting game with all those blocks, attacks, and special moves, look elsewhere. But if you want a quick-and-dirty fighting game that works, plays extremely quick, and can even fit in your pocket, Flash Duel might just fill that gap in your gaming collection.

Pros:
Easy to learn and teach
Fun for younger players and start-up kid gamers
Very portable, especially the 1vs1
Plays very, very fast
Lots of characters and play modes

Cons:
Not very substantial
Requires imagination to be fun at all
Does nothing particularly interesting or fresh

Sister Named As Interim President of OLLU

? Our Lady of the Lake University today returned to its roots, naming the former Superior General of the Congregation of Divine Providence to be Interim President, succeeding Tessa Martinez Pollack, who resigned last week.

?

? Sister Jane Slater has a long history at OLLU, she is a former chemistry professor, dean of faculty, and chairperson of the Academic Affairs Committee.

?

? She is also a former Superior General of the Congregation.

?

? "I am pleased that Sister Jane Ann has accepted the important charge to lead the University during this transitional period, Roy Terracina, chairman of the OLLU Board of Trustees, said.? "Her membership in our sponsoring order and long history with the University will allow a seamless transition and make it possible for the University to move forward rapidly with its Strategic Plan."

?

? One of the complaints against Martinez Pollack was her alleged downplaying of religion and religious studies.

The study combines the cycles of sulphur, nitrogen and carbon in the ecosystem, as it shows that the molecular clusters need sulphuric acid, amines and oxygenated organics for growth. When the clusters reach a size of 1.5-2 nm, their growth increases considerably. The measurements were conducted at the University of Helsinki SMEAR II (Station for Measuring Forest Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations) measurement station in Hyytil, southern Finland, which is among the most comprehensive stations in the world for atmosphere and biosphere research.

During the last five years, the researchers at the University of Helsinki Physics Department have developed a Particle Size Magnifier (PSM), which is the first particle counter able to detect clusters and particles as small as 1 nm in diameter. The instrument is commercially available through the spin-off company Airmodus. The scientists have also put effort into developing mass spectrometric methods for measuring the composition of the recently born clusters. The results in this study would not have been achieved without this technical development.

Professor Kulmala predicted the existence of neutral molecular clusters already in the year 2000 and their growth mechanisms in 2004.

He says: "Years of systematical research are now bearing fruit. My theoretical predictions have been proven to reflect the reality."

He stresses that knowledge of the formation and growth mechanisms of nanoparticles is needed for understanding the interactions within the climate system. Assessing the global impact requires an extensive data bank and a world-wide observation network.

How To Deal With the Pressure of Being a Business Founder ...

Being the founder of a business is one of the most pressure-filled endeavors one could ever take on. As Sean Percival, an LA-based entrepreneur and co-founder, points out in a recent blog post, ?Having a start-up today is not about crushing it. It?s about not getting crushed.?

In recognition that being a founder isn?t without serious difficulties, SimplifyThis asked our friends at Noomii: the professional coach directory to provide some advice for dealing with the pressures that founding a business can bring.

Photo: Sebastian Fissore, www.sebafissore.com.ar

Check your reality

? How someone views pressure can be worked with,? according to Paul Strobl a Houston based executive, life and entrepreneurship coach. ?New perspectives can help ease pressures.? Pressure is a perception, not a fact,? he says.? If you?re looking to cut down on the feeling of pressure at work, Strobl suggests asking yourself a few questions including, what can you do to delegate, systematize, or outsource?? How do you know when you?ve done enough for the day?? How do you know when you?ve had ?enough? success?? Additionally he encourages people to consider what the worst case scenario looks like. ?When you know you can deal with anything that comes, you have no fear.? No fear equals no pressure.? You keep doing what you?re doing and the outcome doesn?t mean anything about you. A project can be a failure.? A person cannot unless he/she decides to stop trying,? he adds.

Don?t be a lone wolf

According to Dan Weigold, a Colorado based leadership coach, for many entrepreneurs there is a sense of having to do it alone and many founders lack someone whom they can talk to objectively to help them deal with all the issues of running a business.? ?The founder faces the full weight and responsibility of getting the business to be successful, that means marketing, sales, product development, and producing results and it can be overwhelming,? Weigold says. For him the solution includes working with a coach or finding a mentor through SCORE or the Small Business Development Community (www.sba.gov) to develop plans to help reduce the stress of managing a business. ?The idea is not to go it alone,? Weigold says.? ?It means finding someone to provide some positive support and encouragement and a dose of validation to the founder so they don?t feel overwhelmed.?

Take renewal breaks

According to Sean D. Stewart an entrepreneurship, life and career coach based in Hawaii, disengaging from your day to day consistently throughout the day, week, month, quarter and year is a way to manage the pressures of being a founder. For Stewart, it?s about ?Not falling into some God complex that it?s all about you and your business, and trusting in the process that is bigger than you.? Some other tips on Stewart?s list: ?Patience.? A supportive and loving peer group.? Not taking failures or losses as losses but being grateful for them for what they teach you. Meditation, spirituality.? Family time.? A sound business strategy that doesn?t allow for over-commitment.? Under promising, over delivering.? Balance.?

Practice gratitude

Patricia Reynolds-Meade, a California based life and christian coach says having a gratitude practice is one of the biggest tools she utilizes for creating ease, grace and manifestation in her life. ?When things get chaotic in my life or business, I use my gratitude practice to consciously shift my focus away from what is not working to what I am grateful for (what is working),? she says. ?Moving my thoughts from a place of lack, loss, anger, frustration or despair to counting all the amazing blessings in my life, gives me the power to receive more goodness that is meant to come my way.?

According to Reynolds-Meade, in order to connect to your gratitude count your blessings at night. ? It takes your attention away from work thoughts and prepares your mind for a peaceful and happy sleep,? she says. She also suggests writing in a daily gratitude journal to help you remember all the positive things that happened throughout the day. ?It?s easy to look at your to-do list and see all that did not get done; however, when you take the time to write down what you are grateful for, you begin to see your life as more enriched and fulfilling,? she says.

Get out of the pressure cooker

Ed Britton a leadership, career and executive coach in Xiamin, suggests that there aren?t any ?best techniques for dealing? with life perpetually in the pressure cooker. ?This kind of life style and business practice is fundamentally wrong. Living your life that way simply won?t work. It is not to be admired. Don?t tolerate it in yourself or others,? Britton suggests. ?A person has to get out of the pressure according to their needs. Others have to be trusted to step in and assume the burden for a period of time. If that can?t happen, then, at some level, the system is sick and people will end up getting hurt, he says. ?Systems that require this kind of behavior, and people who engage in it, simply cannot be tolerated regardless of short term yet unsustainable benefits.?

CMU welcomes new president Subra Suresh

The Indian-born engineer and scientist introduced to Carnegie Mellon University's campus Thursday for the first time as the school's president-elect told his audience he saw similarity between his personal journey and that of the institution he soon will lead.

Subra Suresh, 56, noted that the university's founder, Andrew Carnegie, came to this country as a boy and went on to become a leading industrialist and philanthropist.

"He symbolizes the American dream in many ways," said Mr. Suresh, currently director of the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. "And on a much smaller scale, I can say I have experienced that same spirit of the American dream."

Mr. Suresh, who becomes CMU's ninth president July 1, recalled how with money borrowed for a one-way ticket and with less than $100 in his pocket, he came to America to pursue graduate studies at Iowa State University.

"By now you have figured out why I speak with an Iowa accent," he said in a tongue-in-cheek remark that drew applause and laughter from nearly 450 faculty, students, staff and others inside Carnegie Mellon's McConomy Auditorium in the school's University Center.

Fast-forwarding to today, Mr. Suresh said that since news of his selection surfaced a couple weeks ago, "I have been inundated with such warmth and welcoming remarks from such a large fraction of the community, from the faculty to the students to the staff."

He reiterated his plan to embark on a months-long listening tour that will include open forums to get a sense of the varied perspectives that make up a major research university such as CMU.

Mr. Suresh said he first visited the campus in the early 1980s and has interacted with its students, faculty and others over the years in various capacities including editor-in-chief of a journal based on the campus and as chairman of a board of visitors at CMU about 12 years ago.

"I very much look forward to interacting with this community, getting to know this community that I have admired from afar for quite some time," he said.

The 35-minute welcoming event drew various leaders, including trustees chairman Ray Lane and James E. Rohr, who chaired the presidential search committee and is chairman and chief executive officer of PNC Financial Services Group.

The session began -- naturally -- with a bagpipe performance, befitting Carnegie Mellon's Scottish roots.

After applause and some opening remarks, CMU president Jared Cohon, a Cleveland native, recalled for the audience how his own introduction to campus 16 years ago in the same room turned briefly uncomfortable when he uttered words that were nothing short of sacrilege in Steelers Nation, telling the crowd back then that "you can take the boy out of Cleveland, but you can't take the Browns out of the boy."

The room 16 years ago fell silent.

"Never joke about the Steelers," Mr. Cohon quipped.

He then turned to his successor, noting that along with being NSF director, Mr. Suresh has worked at Brown University and MIT, something that suggests he might be a New England Patriots fan.

If that's true, Mr. Cohon told Mr. Suresh in a remark that drew laughter, "Don't ever admit it. It's Steelers."

Accompanying Mr. Suresh to the event were his wife, Mary, and two grown daughters, Nina and Meera.

Mr. Suresh praised Mr. Cohon's nearly 16-year tenure saying the institution was in wonderful shape.

Mr. Cohon acknowledged the transition is under way but also quipped, "I'm a lame duck but not a dead duck. I still have four months or so left."

Fathom Is an Immersive Guide To New Music Through the Artists You Love

Fathom Is an Immersive Guide To New Music Through the Artists You Love A lot of services help you discover new music through songs you or your friends like, but Fathom takes a unique visual approach that lets you explore dozens of bands and sample their music (or listen to full tracks) just by typing in the name of an artist you like.

Unlike streaming services like Pandora or Spotify, Fathom is designed to help you find and explore new music, as opposed to just stream tracks while you work. Type in the name of an artist you enjoy, and Fathom will start playing songs from one of their albums right up front in the center of the page. (If you're an Rdio subscriber you'll hear full songs, otherwise you'll hear previews.) You can listen to anything on the album that's playing, or view the artist or album at Amazon MP3, iTunes, Grooveshark, Last.fm, and more.

On the left and right of the album in the center, you'll see related artists and albums, any one of which you can click on to browse the tracks on the album, add them to your queue, or remove from the list and replace with another suggestion. The project is a labor of love, and you can read more about what developer Ian Gilman was aiming to do with it at his blog. It's not an automatic, hands-off music experience, but if you like getting hands-on with music discovery and playing with the songs you find, Fathom is worth trying.

Georgia Photos: First Wedding, Then Work

Photographer:?

Temo Bardzimashvili

The Armenians of Akhalkalaki, Georgia, celebrate Trndez, the traditional festival of newlyweds, on February 13. A local priest conducts a religious service to bless the newlyweds and presents each couple with a copy of the Bible. Following sunset, a bonfire is lit and the couples jump over it holding hands.

In Akhalkalaki, where unemployment runs higher than the Georgian national average, winter has been a traditional wedding time following the breakup of the Soviet Union. In spring most of male population leaves Georgia to look for work abroad, mostly in Russia and Armenia, and then returns home in late fall.

Temo Bardzimashvili is a freelance photojournalist based in Tbilisi.

CHICAGO (AP) - President Barack Obama is portraying his State of the Union proposals as elements of a concerted effort to build "ladders of opportunity" into the middle class.

In remarks Friday at Hyde Park Academy in his hometown of Chicago, Obama says by reducing gun violence, expanding preschool access, raising the minimum wage and improving job training, the U.S. can ensure every child has a chance to succeed.

He's also calling for initiatives to encourage marriage, strong parenting and responsible fatherhood.

Obama's address in Chicago is the last leg of a three-day tour to rally support for the ideas he presented Tuesday in his address before a joint session of Congress. Republicans are already voicing skepticism about many of his proposals.
