(AP) ? R.A. Dickey saved his career by cultivating a knuckleball. Now he's using it to rewrite the Mets' record book as baseball's most dominant pitcher.

Dickey became the first major leaguer in 24 years to throw consecutive one-hitters and Ike Davis hit a grand slam to lead New York past the Baltimore Orioles 5-0 on Monday night.

Coming off a one-hit gem at Tampa Bay last Wednesday, Dickey struck out a career-high 13 and allowed only Wilson Betemit's clean single in the fifth inning. He has not permitted an earned run in 42 2-3 innings, the second-longest stretch in club history behind Dwight Gooden's streak of 49 innings in 1985.

"I don't really feel much more confident than I did the last couple years," Dickey said. "I've always felt like I have a pretty good knuckleball. I worked hard to do that."

The previous pitcher to spin consecutive one-hitters was Dave Stieb for Toronto in September 1988, according to STATS LLC. The Mets said the last to match the feat ? or top it ? in the National League was Jim Tobin with the 1944 Boston Braves, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau. Tobin tossed a one-hitter followed by a no-hitter.

The 37-year-old Dickey (11-1) walked two and became the first 11-game winner in the majors, befuddling Baltimore with knucklers that ranged from 66-81 mph in a game that took just 2 hours, 7 minutes. He fanned the final two hitters and four of his last five, topping his previous career best of 12 strikeouts set Wednesday against the Rays.

"Yeah, it's surreal," Dickey said. "You almost get emotional out there, especially that last hitter. You hear everybody, like one big heartbeat beating. That's the best way I could explain it."

A longtime journeyman before joining the Mets in 2010, Dickey has won a career-best nine straight decisions and six consecutive starts. He is tied for the major league lead in ERA (2.00), strikeouts (103) and complete games (three).

It was his fourth game this season with double-digit strikeouts, most in the majors, and the fifth of his career. The right-hander has an incredible 71 strikeouts and six walks in his last seven starts.

"I'm going to leave it to you guys to explain it. I'm just going to try to be in the moment with it," said Dickey, a deeply religious deep thinker.

Betemit's two-out single in the fifth ended Dickey's franchise-record streak of 13 hitless innings.

"Do I have a chance to appeal that base hit? Did anybody dive for that ball? I got a bad view," Mets manager Terry Collins said, drawing laughs.

The only blemish Wednesday night was B.J. Upton's infield single with two outs in the first, a high bouncer that third baseman David Wright tried to field with his bare hand.

After the game, the Mets appealed the official scoring decision to Major League Baseball, asking the commissioner's office to review the play and consider whether Wright should be charged with an error, thus giving Dickey the team's second no-hitter this month. The appeal was denied and Dickey said he was relieved, explaining that there would have been "an asterisk by it bigger than the no-hitter itself."

The only active knuckleballer in the majors, Dickey has a 1.21 ERA and 88 strikeouts during his nine-game winning streak. It was his fifth career shutout and second this season, both in June. Pretty amazing for a guy who relies on a seemingly uncontrollable pitch that he throws harder and with more precision than just about anyone else who's made a living on it.

"He has no wild pitches this year. That's impressive," Baltimore slugger Adam Jones said. "He's in a groove."

The Mets said Dickey has made five straight starts with no earned runs allowed and at least eight strikeouts, the longest streak in major league history, according to Elias.

One of the people Dickey can thank for his incredible success story is Orioles manager Buck Showalter, who was instrumental in persuading the pitcher to remake himself into a knuckleballer when both were with the Texas Rangers.

"He had every attribute of a major league pitcher except the arm," Showalter said, his thoughts then turning to the fact that his team was about to face Dickey. "I wish it hadn't happened."

After the game, Dickey said he would be remiss not to thank Showalter.

"You know, and this is a tip of the hat to him: It was fairly poetic, I thought. The last game he saw me pitch live I gave up six home runs and tied a modern-day major league record," Dickey said. "It's really incredible."

A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team and a first-round draft pick out of Tennessee, Dickey was devastated when the Rangers reduced their signing-bonus offer from more than $800,000 to $75,000 after they discovered during a physical that he was missing a major ligament in his pitching elbow.

Undeterred, perseverance got him to the big leagues anyway. When he failed, the knuckleball brought him back.

Committed to his craft, Dickey enlisted the help of former knuckleballers like Charlie Hough and Hall of Famer Phil Niekro. Along the way, teammates and fans were introduced to his unique personality: A voracious reader, Dickey climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in January to raise money for charity and released an autobiography that revealed suicidal thoughts and the sexual abuse he endured as a child.

He's even featured in a documentary film called "Knuckleball."

Dickey made his mark at the plate on Monday, too, sparking New York's big rally with a leadoff single in the sixth against Jake Arrieta (3-9). Jordany Valdespin doubled with one out and Dickey had to scramble back to third after he initially broke the wrong way on Wright's lineout to shortstop. The pitcher barely beat the throw with a headfirst dive, which turned out to be a crucial play.

Lucas Duda walked and Davis hit the next pitch just to the left of center for his seventh home run of the year and first career slam.

Valdespin tripled off Kevin Gregg in the eighth and scored on Wright's single. The Mets, who lead the NL with seven shutouts, had lost three straight and nine of 13.

WATCH: Shia LaBeouf Goes Full-Frontal in NSFW Music Vid

Fact: The music video for Sigur Ros' "Fjogur Piano" will be the weirdest thing you see all day. Why, you ask? Because the eight-and-a-half-minute video from the Icelandic indie-rock group features Transformers star Shia LaBeouf cross-dressing, ballet dancing with a naked woman (Denna Thompson), voraciously licking a psychedelic lollipop, punching mirrors and... showing off his penis. That's right, Shia's little LaBeouf makes its acting debut about 30 seconds in. Watch the NSFW video now -- unless, of course, you're at work (in which case, you know, we'd advise watching it later.)

The weight of nations: An estimation of adult human biomass

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? The world population is over seven billion and all of these people need feeding. However, the energy requirement of a species depends not only on numbers but on its average mass. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Public Health has estimated the total mass of the human population, defined its distribution by region, and the proportion of this biomass due to the overweight and obesity.

Up to half of all food eaten is burned up in physical activity. Increasing mass means higher energy requirements, because it takes more energy to move a heavy body. Even at rest a bigger body burns more energy.

Using data from the United Nations and World Health Organization, researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimated that the adult human population weights in at 287 million tonnes. 15 millions of which is due to the overweight and 3.5 million due to obesity.

While the average body mass globally was 62kg, North America, which has the highest body mass of any continent, with an average body mass of 80.7kg. North America has only 6% of the world's population but 34% of the world's biomass mass due to obesity. In contrast Asia has 61% of the world's population but only 13% of the world's biomass due to obesity.

If all countries had the same average BMI as the USA the total human biomass would increase by 58 million tonnes -- this is the equivalent of an additional 935 million people of world average body mass.

Explaining the implications of this study Sarah Walpole said, "Our results emphasize the importance of looking at biomass rather than just population numbers when considering the ecological impact of a species, especially humans."

This study was based on the 2005 WHO SURF report so it is an underestimate of the current situation. The world's population is continuing to increase in size -- the UN predicts that by 2050 there could be 8.9 billion people on the planet.

Prof Ian Roberts, continued, "Everyone accepts that population growth threatens global environmental sustainability -- our study shows that population fatness is also a major threat. Unless we tackle both population and fatness -- our chances are slim."

Chinese astronauts have successfully docked with a prototype space station, paving the way for a moon mission after 2020.?

Chip Reid reports on China's big leap in the space race.

The Shenzhou 9 and its three-person crew, which includes China's first woman in space Liu Yang, linked with the Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) 1 module, with state television showing the pictures live.

Almost three hours later, the blue jumpsuit-wearing mission commander, Jing Haipeng, entered the module followed by colleague Liu Wang and Liu Yang, the first time China has been able to transfer astronauts between two orbiting craft.

Rendezvous and docking exercises between the two vessels are an important hurdle in China's efforts to acquire the technological and logistical skills to run a full space lab that can house astronauts for long periods.

During the 13-day mission, the astronauts will work and sleep aboard Tiangong 1, a trial module that includes an exercise bike and a video telephone booth, according to media.

The mission has been accompanied by a blaze of national pride and has been given blanket coverage by state media, down to discussion on how flying a space ship is a bit like driving a car and how the astronauts will be able to spice up their food with chilli sauce.

China is still far from catching up with the established space superpowers, the United States and Russia. The Tiangong 1 is a trial module, not the building block of a space station.

But the docking mission is the latest show of China's growing prowess in space and comes while budget restraints and shifting priorities have held back U.S. manned space launches.

This is China's fourth manned space mission since 2003 when astronaut Yang Liwei became the country's first person in orbit.

The United States will not test a new rocket to take people into space until 2017, and Russia has said manned missions are no longer a priority.

But NASA has begun investing in U.S. firms to provide commercial spaceflight services and is spending about $3 billion a year on a new rocket and capsule to send astronauts to the moon, asteroids and eventually to Mars.

China plans an unmanned moon landing and deployment of a moon rover. Scientists have raised the possibility of sending a man to the moon, but not before 2020.

The Open Notebook: A Look Into How Science Writers Work

Pitching is an art in itself: you have to convince editors?a ruthless breed?that they should publish your story. In theory, you do know how to write a pitch. In reality, you lack practice and your pitches are getting rejected. But no need to despair. Thanks to The Open Notebook, you can browse through a database of successful pitches and learn from the very best science writers.

The pitch database is only one of the endeavours of The Open Notebook. The non-profit organisation also publishes interviews with leading science writers to give an insight on their working process, as well as a wide range of features which look at various aspects of science writing: spotting a good science story, keeping your research organised, finding a good narrative.

The goal of The Open Notebook is to explore the science writers? entire process when working on a story. It wants to showcase science journalism as a craft. To do so, it takes a very interesting approach: it shows that science writing, just like science, is first and foremost a human enterprise.

The Open Notebook is not only a fantastic resource for young and early-career science writers, it is also a great source of motivation.

Prosthetic leg lost at sea, returned to owner

(AP) ? A fisherman was surprised when he hauled up a prosthetic leg from the Gulf of Mexico, and even more surprised when he was able to find its owner.

The leg is emblazoned with the logo from the University of Kentucky and the school's wildcat mascot. Fisherman Matt Willingham says he contacted the manufacturer about finding the leg's owner.

WKYT-TV (http://bit.ly/LHUOHZ) in Lexington reports that it belonged to Fred Robinson, who played on the school's football team in the 1980s and had lost his leg in a work accident five years ago.

Robinson says he was shocked to find out someone found his $30,000 prosthetic leg.

Robinson, who now lives in Florida, says he lost the prosthetic while swimming over the Memorial Day weekend.

'Madagascar 3,' 'Prometheus' team for big weekend

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Circus animals and space beasts have lifted Hollywood to a huge weekend.

The cuddly critters of "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" led the weekend with a $60.4 million debut domestically, followed by a big opening for Ridley Scott's alien saga "Prometheus" at No. 2 with $50 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3" was the family favorite for the weekend, reuniting voice stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer as the zoo animals continue their travels by joining a circus.

"Madagascar 3" outdid the $47.2 million debut of the 2005 original, though it came in behind the $63.1 million opening of the first sequel, 2008's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa." ''Europe's Most Wanted" had the added benefit of today's higher ticket prices and a bump from fans who caught 3-D shows, which cost a few dollars more than 2-D screenings.

Still, fans remain loyal to the franchise, and "Madagascar 3" received generally better reviews than the previous two installments.

"It's the beloved characters and their comic adventures. And 'Madagascar 3' is critically the best-reviewed of the franchise. Both audiences and critics really love this one the most," said Anne Globe, head of marketing for DreamWorks Animation.

"Madagascar 3" also took in $75.5 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $135.9 million.

"Prometheus," from 20th Century Fox, stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in an offshoot of director's Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror tale "Alien." ''Prometheus" did big business despite an R rating, which can limit a movie's audience since fans under 17 must see it with an adult.

Conventional wisdom is that action films should come in with a PG-13 rating to cast the widest net possible for its audience.

"A $50 million weekend disproves that rule, for sure," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox. "This movie is so special. It's visually stunning, great storytelling as Ridley is known for. It's Ridley Scott's vision. I'm an unabashed fan of the movie, and the performance at the box office bears that out."

The movie added $39.2 million overseas, bringing its international total to $91.5 million and its worldwide take to $141.5 million since it began rolling out in some markets a week earlier.

The one-two punch of "Madagascar 3" and "Prometheus" lifted Hollywood out of an early dip in summer-season revenue. After three-straight weekends of declining receipts, domestic business totaled $177 million, up 29 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Super 8" led with $35.5 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"It has to do with the variety of movies in the marketplace," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "This is a perfectly programmed summer weekend with a PG-rated animated family film combined with an R-rated, intense sci-fi movie."

The previous weekend's top draw, Universal's "Snow White & the Huntsman," slipped to third-place with $23 million, raising its domestic total to $98.5 million.

Sony's "Men in Black 3" finished fourth with $13.5 million, putting its domestic receipts at $135.5 million.

The superhero smash "The Avengers," from Disney's Marvel Studios, was No. 5 with $10.8 million, lifting its domestic total to $571.9 million. The year's top-grossing film, "The Avengers" added $7.8 million overseas, raising its international haul to $824.4 million and its worldwide revenue to just under $1.4 billion.

Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games," No. 2 on this year's box-office chart, took in $1.1 million to cross the $400 million mark. Its domestic total stands at $400.3 million, and the film has taken in nearly $650 million worldwide.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," $60.4 million ($75.5 million).

2. "Prometheus," $50 million ($39.2 million international).

3. "Snow White & the Huntsman," $23 million ($24.6 million international).

4. "Men in Black 3," $13.5 million ($38.3 million international).

5. "The Avengers," $10.8 million ($7.8 million international).

6. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," $3.2 million.

7. "What to Expect When You're Expecting," $2.7 million.

8. "Battleship," $2.3 million.

9. "The Dictator," $2.2 million ($4.9 million international).

10. "Moonrise Kingdom," $1.6 million.

NPR 'Car Talk' duo retiring; reruns to continue

The Magliozzi brothers said Friday, June 8, 2012, they will stop making new episodes of their comic auto advice show at the end of September, 25 years after "Car Talk" began in Boston. (AP) ? The comic mechanics on NPR's "Car Talk" are pulling in to the garage.

Brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi said Friday they will stop making new episodes of their joke-filled auto advice show at the end of September, 25 years after "Car Talk" began in Boston. Repurposed versions of old shows will stay on National Public Radio indefinitely, however.

The show airs every Saturday morning and is NPR's most popular program.

"We've managed to avoid getting thrown off NPR for 25 years, giving tens of thousands of wrong answers and had a hell of a time every week talking to callers," Ray Magliozzi said. "The stuff in our archives still makes us laugh. So we figured, why keep slaving over a hot microphone?"

The duo will continue writing their "Dear Tom and Ray" column twice a week, NPR said.

With their byplay and Boston accents, "Car Talk" was as much about laughs as motor advice. On last week's show, a caller confessed that she had broken the clutches of some ex-boyfriends' cars and was now worrying that she was damaging her own.

"That might be the reason none of your relationships lasted," she was told.

The two men proved that public radio didn't have to be stuffy, said Doug Berman, executive producer of the show. "Car Talk" began as a local call-in show on Boston's BUR radio in 1977. It's now on 660 stations across the country, with some 3.3 million listeners a week.

"The guys are culturally right up there with Mark Twain and the Marx Brothers," Berman said. "They will stand the test of time. People will still be enjoying them years from now. They're that good."

The staff has stored and logged some 12,500 phone calls since the show began, rating them in order of their entertainment value, Berman said. They will take the best and use them for the repurposed shows. Berman said he figured there was about eight years' worth of strong material without the show having to repeat itself again.

"I'm the producer of all their shows and I can't remember most of" the calls, he said.

"Car Talk" has tested out the repurposed show and is convinced they will work. There's a strong wish among NPR stations to keep the show going even if there isn't fresh material, he said.

Berman said he knew the retirement was a possibility; Tom is 74. That didn't stop Ray, 63, from mocking him. "My brother has always been work-averse," he said. "Now, apparently, even the one hour a week is killing him."

In a goodbye message posted on their website and titled "Time to Get Even Lazier," Tom wrote, "We're hoping to be like 'I Love Lucy' and air 10 times a day on 'NPR at Nite' in 2075."

Efforts to relax pot rules gaining momentum in US

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Catharine Leach is married and has two boys, age 2 and 8. She has a good job with a federal contractor and smokes pot most every day.

While she worries that her public support for marijuana decriminalization and legalization could cost her a job or bring the police to her door, the 30-year-old Warwick resident said she was tired of feeling like a criminal for using a drug that she said is far less harmful than the glass or wine or can of beer enjoyed by so many others after a long day's work. Like others around the nation working to relax penalties for possession of pot, she decided to stop hiding and speak out.

"I'm done being afraid," she said. "People in this country are finally coming around and seeing that putting someone in jail for this doesn't make sense. It's just a changing of the time."

Once consigned to the political fringe, marijuana policy is appearing on legislative agendas around the country thanks to an energized base of supporters and an increasingly open-minded public. Lawmakers from Rhode Island to Colorado are mulling medical marijuana programs, pot dispensaries, decriminalization and even legalization. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia now authorize medical marijuana and 14, including neighboring Connecticut and Massachusetts, have rolled back criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of pot.

Rhode Island is poised to become the 15th state to decriminalize marijuana possession. The state's General Assembly passed legislation last week that would eliminate the threat of big fines or even jail time for the possession of an ounce or less of pot. Instead, adults caught with small amounts of marijuana would face a $150 civil fine. Police would confiscate the marijuana, but the incident would not appear on a person's criminal record.

Minors caught with pot would also have to complete a drug awareness program and community service.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has said he is inclined to sign the legislation.

One of the bill's sponsors, state Rep. John Edwards of Tiverton, has introduced similar proposals in past years but the idea always sputtered in committee. Each year, though, he got more co-sponsors, and the bill passed the House this year 50-24. The state Senate passed it 28-6.

Some supporters of decriminalization say they'd like to go even further.

"America's 50-year war on drugs has been an abysmal failure," said Rep. John Savage, a retired school principal from East Providence. "Marijuana in this country should be legalized. It should be sold and taxed."

Opponents warned of dire consequences to the new policy.

"What kind of message are we sending to our youth? We are more worried about soda ? for health reasons ? than we are about marijuana," said one opponent, Rhode Island state Rep. John Carnevale a Democrat from Providence.

A survey by Rasmussen last month found that 56 percent of respondents favored legalizing and regulating marijuana. A national Gallup poll last year showed support for legalizing pot had reached 50 percent, up from 46 percent in 2010 and 25 percent in the mid-'90s.

Medical marijuana helped bring marijuana policy into the mainstream back in 1996, when California became the first state to authorize the use of cannabis for medicinal use. Other states followed suit.

"It's now politically viable to talk about these things," said Robert Capecchi, legislative analyst with the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington, D.C.-based group that supports the reduction or elimination of penalties for medical and recreational pot use. "The public understands that there are substances that are far more harmful ? alcohol, tobacco ? that we regulate. People are realizing just how much money is being wasted on prohibition."

Colorado and Washington state will hold fall referendums on legalizing marijuana. A ballot question on legalization failed in California in 2010.

This month, Connecticut's governor signed legislation to allow medical marijuana there. Last week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed cutting the penalty for public possession of small amounts of pot.

Liberal state policies on marijuana have run into conflict with federal prohibition. Federal authorities have shut down more than 40 dispensaries this year in Colorado, even though they complied with state and local law. In Rhode Island, Gov. Lincoln Chafee blocked three dispensaries from opening last year after the state's top federal prosecutor warned they could be prosecuted. Chafee and lawmakers then rewrote the dispensary law to restrict the amount of marijuana dispensaries may have on hand.

Robert DuPont, who served as the nation's drug czar under presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, said Americans should be wary of a slippery slope to legalization. While marijuana may not cause the life-threatening problems associated with heroin, cocaine or methamphetamine, it's far from harmless.

"It is a major drug of abuse," he said. "People ask me what the most dangerous drug is, and I say marijuana. Other drugs have serious consequences that are easy to recognize. Marijuana saps people's motivation, their direction. It's a drug that makes people stupid and lazy. That's in a way more dangerous."

After surviving those old Celtics, LeBron James and the Heat get the Thunder's young guns in the NBA finals.

Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the rest of the Western Conference champions will host Game 1 on Tuesday night when the NBA's championship series comes to Oklahoma City for the first time.

The Thunder finally got their opponent Saturday night when the Heat finished off the Celtics with a 101-88 victory in Game 7, sending Miami to its second straight finals berth and giving James a third attempt at his first ring.

James had 31 points and 12 rebounds to set up a marquee matchup with Durant, the NBA's scoring champion whom he beat out for the league's MVP award.

"I'm looking forward to going against him," James said.

James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh fell short in their first season together, losing in six games to Dallas last year. The Heat earned another chance by winning the final two games against the Celtics, whose older legs might have run out of steam after Boston led the decisive game by seven at halftime.

Energy won't be a problem for the Thunder, whose core of 23-year-old Durant, the league's three-time scoring champion, Westbrook (23) and James Harden (22) was born when the Celtics' Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce was around middle school age.

The Thunder, who moved to Oklahoma City in 2008, roll into their franchise's first finals appearance since the Seattle SuperSonics lost to Chicago in 1996. They surged past San Antonio by winning the final four games after dropping the first two to the No. 1 seed.

After eliminating defending champion Dallas and the Lakers in the first two rounds, the Thunder look to knock out another heavyweight in the Heat, the 2006 NBA champions.

"We all know how tough it's going to be but we're going to fight to the end no matter what, leave it out on floor and we'll live with the results," Durant said.

The Thunder will host the first two games before the series moves to Miami for Games 3-5.

Despite their youth, the Thunder have some finals experience. Starting center Kendrick Perkins played in two finals with the Celtics against the Lakers, both times against teammate Derek Fisher.

"Once you get to the finals, it's just about will and heart," Perkins said. "You could do all the scouting that you want to do and try to get ready for them, but at the end of the day, you done worked so hard to get here that it's just coming from within. You've just got to dig deep.

"By Game 4 or 5, you'll see guys getting tired because of the season being long or whatever. It's just digging deep and seeing who wants it more."

The teams split a pair of meetings during the regular season, each winning at home.

Undoing health law could have messy ripple effects

(AP) ? It sounds like a silver lining. Even if the Supreme Court overturns President Barack Obama's health care law, employers can keep offering popular coverage for the young adult children of their workers.

But here's the catch: The parents' taxes would go up.

That's only one of the messy potential ripple effects when the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the Affordable Care Act this month. The law affects most major components of the U.S. health care system in its effort to extend coverage to millions of uninsured people.

Because the legislation is so complicated, an orderly unwinding would prove difficult if it were overturned entirely or in part.

Better Medicare prescription benefits, currently saving hundreds of dollars for older people with high drug costs, would be suspended. Ditto for preventive care with no co-payments, now available to retirees and working families alike.

Partially overturning the law could leave hospitals, insurers and other service providers on the hook for tax increases and spending cuts without the law's promise of more paying customers to offset losses.

If the law is upheld, other kinds of complications could result.

The nation is so divided that states led by Republicans are largely unprepared to carry out critical requirements such as creating insurance markets. Things may not settle down.

"At the end of the day, I don't think any of the major players in the health insurance industry or the provider community really wants to see the whole thing overturned," said Christine Ferguson, a health policy expert who was commissioner of public health in Massachusetts when Mitt Romney was governor.

While it's unclear how the justices will rule, oral arguments did not go well for the Obama administration. The central issue is whether the government can require individuals to have health insurance and fine them if they don't.

That mandate takes effect in 2014, at the same time that the law would prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage to people with existing health problems. Most experts say the coverage guarantee would balloon costs unless virtually all people joined the insurance pool.

Engineer makes light-up business cards with 555 timer, proves PCB skills

Sure, there have been some pretty creative variations on the standard paper business card, but if you're looking to make a career in electronics engineering, card stock isn't necessarily the best option for material. Such was the case for one student, who had the canny idea to make a card that demonstrates his printed circuit board know-how. He used a 555 timer that outputs a clock to the LEDs on the biz card, and placing a nine-volt battery on the terminals sets off the mini light show. See for yourself in the video below.

Track Tech: Why Betting on Horses Is Legal, When Gambling - WNYC

For the week leading up to the Belmont Stakes, WNYC is partnering with the Innovation Trail,? WEKU?and Louisville Public Media?to explore how technology is changing the horse racing industry. This is part one of a five-part series.

There is one sure bet about gambling in New York state: what is and isn't legal can be a little murky.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has been calling recently for the legalization of casinos in the rest of the state. But for now, casinos on Indian territory are allowed, but not elsewhere.

The state already has what are known as ?racinos?: horse racing tracks where there are also video slot machines, along with plenty of betting on the actual horses ? such as the one that opened last fall at Aqueduct in Queens.

Betting on those same horses online is also allowed. But betting on poker and other card games on the internet is not.

The exception for horse racing has to do with the fact that it?s a sport, and therefore different, according to state Assemblyman Gary Pretlow.

?Horse racing is actually a publicly attended event that no one is really controlling,? said Pretlow, who chairs the assembly?s racing and wagering committee. ?Whereas [in] online gaming, there are too many opportunities for people to cheat.?

Then why does New York not allow betting for all sports, like baseball or football? It has to do partially with just who ? or what ? is competing in the sport, according to attorney Todd Engel, who specializes in horse racing.

?Wagering on athletes has never been part of the framework in New York state,? Engel said.

Horse racing wedges itself between betting on athletes and the controlled environment of table games, he said.

But perhaps the biggest factor is money. Horse racing is a nearly $2 billion industry for the state, according to the New York Racing Association.

And since attendance at race tracks is declining, off-track betting (OTB), video slot machines, dial-a-bet and now online betting are making up a bigger chunk of that.

The problem is, says Pretlow, that while interest in playing the ponies may still be there, fewer people want to make the trip out to the track anymore.

?Horse racing is a spectator sport and people no longer have the desire to go to the race track to bet,? he said. "But we have many different venues for them to view racing and to bet.?

The more ways the state allows betting on horses, the more places there are for it to collect revenue.

That?s not possible with sports, or poker, wagering on the internet. Those are controlled by the federal government so New York wouldn?t be able to take a cut, according to Engel.

But further parsing of the world of horse wagering poses challenges for the older forms of betting.

?No doubt there is an opportunity that could slightly hurt the branches themselves, but we do realize it?s the way of the future,? said E.J. Merriman, branch manager for Western OTB, which owns a track and several parlors in western and central New York.

Western OTB will be launching its own online gambling service soon.

?It?s a slightly struggling industry,? Merriman said. ?It?s something that has to complete with the flash of other sports and other gambling entities that have the noise?? the bling! Bling! Bling! ? and the lights.?

Most of the customers in his parlor or older and along with declining attendance at the track, customers at OTBs have declined too, says Merriman.

He hopes that getting some younger fans into the sport through the internet will entice them to come out to one of his OTB parlors or to a track.
