Will Chinese Airlines Participate in EU ETS?

An interesting news item in Reuters yesterday indicated that Chinese airlines had been instructed not to participate in the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). See David Stanway and Ken Wills, China Aviation Body Urges Members Not to Cooperate with EU CO2 Scheme, Reuters, Dec. 15, 2011 (available here). According to the report,?Wei Zhenzhong, the secretary general of the China Air Transport Association, has instructed airlines not to submit CO2 monitoring plans to European officials. China and the United States have been the most strenuous objectors to the EU's claimed authority to include foreign carriers in the program. This latest news out of China resembles earlier legislation passed by the U.S. Congress, though unlikely to become law, prohibiting U.S. carriers from participating in the EU scheme. The article also quotes Chinese officials as considering retaliatory measures and an eventual legal challenge.

Banks give Europe shares a lift, U.S. data eyed (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Easier European bank-to-bank lending rates and hopes a batch of U.S. data would confirm an improving economic picture, lifted world stocks and the euro on Thursday, but concerns that Europe's debt crisis could intensify kept a lid on the rises.

U.S. stock index futures also pointed to a higher open on Wall Street with the key S&P 500 index on track to record its third straight day of gains.

The final reading on third-quarter GDP, which is expected to confirm a 2.0 percent annualized pace of growth, will be key to sentiment. Investors will also be watching weekly jobless claims, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers and the November report on leading economic indicators from the Conference Board.

In Europe, bank stocks were among the top gainers on sharemarkets after Wednesday's first-ever three-year tender by the European Central Bank drew bids for a record 489 billion euros ($638 billion) for the low interest rate loans from 523 banks, well above the 310 billion euro take-up forecast.

The scale of the funding operation initially exacerbated concerns about the health of the financial system appeared to be easing pressure on the banks, though concerns remain that it offers no fundamental fix for the region's debt problems.

"In the longer-term the liquidity provided yesterday is not going to solve the debt crisis, it is not going to help southern European countries with their problems in getting control of their public debt," said Niels Christensen, FX strategist at Nordea.

Key euro zone bank-to-bank lending rates fell in response to the lending operation.

Three-month Euribor rates, traditionally the main gauge of unsecured interbank euro lending, fell to 1.410 percent from 1.416 percent on the prospect of a flood of new cash entering the financial system. Longer-term rates also fell.

However, U.S. dollar funding costs for euro zone banks rose further as the supply of greenbacks to money markets remained scarce, but this was seen as partly due to year-end pressures.

"Overall, we view the large uptake (at the ECB tender) as positive for the European banks. Leaving aside whether it is good policy or not, it removes funding risk, adds to profits, and also adds to retained earnings and capital," Deutsche Bank analysts wrote in a note.

The euro was up just 0.1 percent to $1.3060 after hitting a session high of $1.3120 in early trade. The single currency is holding steady above an 11-month low of $1.2945 hit last week with traders seeing major support around $1.30, the December 14 low.

In the share market the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index gained around 1.1 percent but is still set to end the year with over a 12 percent loss. The Stoxx Europe 600 bank index (.SX7P) was up 1.5 percent and has gained over 10 percent in the past month.

Miners and oils, which perform well when economic growth is strong, were also among the main movers, with the STOXX Europe 600 Basic Resources index (.SXPP) and the STOXX Europe 600 Oil & Gas index (.SXEP) both up 1.9 percent.

Global stocks, as measured by MSCI world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) edged up 0.25 percent, on track for a fall of about 12 percent in 2011.

Investors are winding down for year-end and trading volumes are set to dwindle but the threat of mass credit ratings downgrades for the euro zone countries is still hanging over the market.

Euro zone debt markets are expected to come under fresh pressure with some 230 billion euros of bank bonds, up to 300 billion in government bonds, and more than 200 billion euros in collateralized debt all maturing in the first quarter of 2012.

ITALIAN CONFIDENCE VOTE

In debt markets attention was focused on Italy where a vote of confidence is due in the upper house on Prime Minister Mario Monti's government to seal approval of a 33-billion euro ($43 billion) austerity package.

The package passed in the lower house last week and is expected to succeed just as easily in the upper house. Were Monti to lose the vote, his government would collapse.

Italian 10-year bond yields were little changed ahead of the vote at around 6.8 percent after the ECB was forced to step back into the secondary market on Wednesday as yields jumped higher in the wake of the ECB's loan tender.

Commodities markets were muted in thinning pre-holiday trade, with London Metal Exchange copper up about 0.9 percent at $7,520 a ton and Brent crude oil gained around 0.3 percent to around $108.03 a barrel.

Reports: Yahoo exploring sale of Asian holdings

(AP) ? Yahoo appears to be getting closer to giving its frustrated shareholders something they've long wanted: a sale of the Internet company's holdings in China and Japan.

The prospect of Yahoo Inc. finally consummating a deal with China's Alibaba Group and Softbank Corp., the controlling owner of Yahoo Japan, emerged in online reports published Wednesday by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, both newspapers reported Yahoo is exploring a proposal valued at about $17 billion, or $14 per share. The price reflects Wall Street's belief that Yahoo's investments in Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan have become the company's most valuable pieces. Yahoo's U.S. business has lost its luster as the company's website loses traffic and advertising revenue to Internet search leader Google Inc. and Facebook's social network.

Yahoo ended Wednesday with a market value of about $20 billion, based on its stock closing price of $15.99. The shares gained 88 cents, with most of the surge occurring after the reports of Yahoo's talks with its Asian partners.

If the deal comes together, Alibaba and Softbank would contribute cash and certain assets to newly formed entities. Yahoo would then surrender its 35 percent stake in Yahoo Japan and most of its holdings in Alibaba to gain control of new entities, according to the Times.

Yahoo would retain a 15 percent stake in privately held Alibaba, down from 42 percent as of Sept. 30, according to the company's most recent quarterly report.

The transaction would be designed to avoid a big tax bill ? a stumbling block in Yahoo's previous discussions to sell its Asian holdings.

Yahoo declined to comment Wednesday. Alibaba didn't respond to requests for comments.

The renewed talks among Yahoo, Alibaba and Softbank are the latest bit of boardroom intrigue that that has been unfolding since Yahoo abruptly fired Carol Bartz as CEO in early September after losing patience with her attempts to turn around the company during her 2? years on the job.

Since then, Yahoo's board has been mulling a variety of options that have included selling the Asian holdings, selling a 20 percent stake to buyout firms or even auctioning off the whole company.

The nine-director board has been leaning in different directions as it ruminates. Just a few weeks ago, it appeared the board was leaning toward selling a large stake to a group led by Silver Lake Partners for $16.60 per share or TPG Capital for $17.60 per share.

That idea didn't go over well with some of Yahoo's major shareholders, including hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, who has been threatening to overthrow the company's board.

Yahoo's board is scheduled to discuss the proposed divestiture of the company's Asian holdings in a Thursday meeting, according to the Times. The newspaper said the directors intend to decide whether to intensify negotiations that could last for a few more weeks.

Longform?s Guide to the Best Science Writing of 2011

?Mavrik, the object of Trut's attention, is about the size of a Shetland sheepdog, with chestnut orange fur and a white bib down his front. He plays his designated role in turn: wagging his tail, rolling on his back, panting eagerly in anticipation of attention. In adjacent cages lining either side of the narrow, open-sided shed, dozens of canids do the same, yelping and clamoring in an explosion of fur and unbridled excitement. ?As you can see,? Trut says above the din, ?all of them want human contact.? Today, however, Mavrik is the lucky recipient. Trut reaches in and scoops him up, then hands him over to me. Cradled in my arms, gently jawing my hand in his mouth, he's as docile as any lapdog.

Obama, pushing back at Republicans, vows support for Israel (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama assured Jewish voters on Friday he remains committed to Israel's security and a two-state solution with the Palestinians as he defended himself against attacks on his policy from Republican presidential challengers.

Obama, who has been criticized by Republicans and some in the American Jewish community for being too tough on a close ally, insisted his administration has done more than any other to protect Israel and called his commitment "unshakeable."

"So don't let anybody else tell a different story," Obama told a cheering crowd at a conference of the Union for Reform Judaism, a politically liberal group. "Those are the facts."

Obama did not name names but left little doubt he was responding to Republican candidates who have recently tried to outdo each other in criticizing his policy toward Israel as they seek to cut into his support among Jewish voters.

Mitt Romney said recently Obama has "repeatedly thrown Israel under the bus," and Newt Gingrich thrust himself into controversy last week by declaring that the Palestinians are an "invented" people who want to destroy Israel.

Obama, in a pointed reference to his Republican opponents, said the bonds between Israel and the United States "transcend partisan politics -- or at least they should."

The White House wants to shore up support among Jewish voters for Obama's 2012 re-election bid. He won nearly eight of every 10 Jewish voters in 2008, but a slip would jeopardize his re-election drive in battleground states like Florida and Pennsylvania, where Jews are an important swing bloc.

Obama faced criticism from some Jewish leaders earlier this year when he insisted any negotiations on borders of a future Palestinian state begin on the basis of lines that existed before Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967.

He has also had a strained relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and his Middle East peace efforts have mostly stalled.

But Obama won praise from Israel and its backers for his opposition to a Palestinian push beginning in September to win U.N. statehood recognition, and he has also been credited for taking a tough line with Iran, Israel's arch enemy.

"We're going to keep standing with our Israeli friends and allies," Obama said. He called Iran's nuclear program a threat not only to Israel but to the world and reiterated Washington "will take no options off the table" in the standoff.

Obama also reaffirmed U.S. support for the eventual creation of "an independent Palestine alongside a secure Jewish state of Israel" and pledged not to waver from that goal.

Amy Winehouse To Be Honored At 'VH1 Divas' Concert

Florence Welch, Nas and others will pay tribute to the late soul singer on Sunday night.

Amy Winehouse will be remembered on Sunday at the "VH1 Divas concert. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, Wanda Jackson, and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will all take the stage to honor the late singer. The tribute will be introduced by Nas.

Jackson and Welch will perform Winehouse's "Back to Black," while Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will take the stage with "You Know I'm No Good." The Dap-Kings played on the singer's Back to Black album. Nas and Winehouse worked together on the track "Like Smoke," which appears on her posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures.

Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Florence and the Machine, and Jessie J will participate in the star-studded lineup for the long-running concert event, which airs Monday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.

This year, VH1 is paying tribute to prominent birthplaces of soul music, including Chicago, Detroit, London, Memphis and Philadelphia. The divas are expected to pay homage to these cities and the genre with their own soulful tracks as well as some of soul music's classic tunes onstage at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom.

And the celebration is not exclusive to women. The Roots have been confirmed as the event's house band, and ?uestlove is set to pull double duty during the concert as musical director. Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy will also perform.

Bruno Mars, Russell Brand and Tony Bennett paid tribute to Amy Winehouse at the VMAs back in August. Mars performed Winehouse's cover of the Zutons' "Valerie," while Bennett was on hand to present footage of their recording session for his album Duets II.

"This is not just another London chancer, not just another person milling about waiting to be famous," Brand recalled of seeing Winehouse perform during the tribute. "What is this incredible sound? This timeless sound like a roar from the guts of humanity? The kind of voice that Billie Holiday sung with, the kind of voice that Ella Fitzgerald sung with."

Pelican i1075 HardBack Case for iPad and iPad 2 Review

Photo 21

Some reports suggest that the vast majority of iPads and other assorted tablets spend the majority of time at home. That may be the case for some, even many, iPads but it is certainly not true for mine. No, my iPad goes pretty much everywhere these days, and that means I need a good way to carry it. And when I am going on a trip I need a good way to protect the iPad AND carry some assorted accessories such as the charger, headphones and, at times, a wireless keyboard. That is why I was so curious about Pelican?s 1075 Hardback case for the iPad. It allows you to carry your iPad, Apple?s Bluetooth wireless keyboard and a number of other accessories while keeping them safe. (This IS Pelican after all and they are known for heavy-duty protection.)

The company even goes so far as to refer to the i1075 Hardback as a ?portable office?. A case that turns your iPad into a portable office? That?s crazy-talk isn?t it? Well, perhaps not? read on.

Photo 17

The Hype:

Protect your iPad or netbook from those heartbeat-skipping mishaps with the Pelican 1075 HardBack? Case. Constructed of high strength ABS, the 1075 is dustproof, watertight, and crushproof. The easy open latch remains shut under pressure or after impact. A built-in automatic purge valve keeps water and dust out while balancing air pressure.

Choose the i1075 model for the iPad?, iPad2? or iPad2? with Smart Cover. Equipped with a molded liner that adds impact shock protection and will not scratch your tablet. Also included is an integrated easel for hands-free viewing in horizontal or vertical position. Storage is also provided underneath the keyboard for an adapter, cables, and earbuds ? your office on the go!

For netbook protection, choose the 1075CC with a shock absorbing liner or the 1075 that comes with the customizable Pick N Pluck? foam.

Pelican 1075 & i1075: Built in the USA and backed by our legendary lifetime guarantee.

Photo 22

The Reality:

The Pelican i1075 HardBack case means serious business. It is black. It is heavy. It completely protects the contents stowed in it. It is heavy. It comes with a removable shoulder strap. Did I mention, it is heavy?!?

The quality of the design that went into the case is superb. The inserts that hold the iPad, keyboard and accessories in place are precise. Even when you are seeing the case for the first time it is abundantly clear what goes where. The keyboard compartment screams out ?Put a keyboard here- fast!!!?. The wall adapter spot yell, ?Charger here please!? And the iPad sits right on top safely cushioned at all corners and on the top and bottom. In fact, when the top is closed on the entire setup EVERYTHING is held completely in place with no room for movement.

The execution of the construction is also superb. All of the pieces fit together with precision. The locking mechanism is secure and there is no doubt you can trust it to keep the contents safely inside. And the shoulder straps attach to the case through slots that are actually part of the case so there is no question they will remain secure. I do, however, wish there was a handle so you could hold the case like a briefcase.

Mail

More details from Pelican:

Cushion Insert: Unique molded liner protects from impact shock yet won?t scratch iPad?.

Integrated Easel: Optimizes hands free viewing angles in horizontal or vertical positions.

Accessory Storage: Power cords and earbuds stow below keyboard.

Removable Shoulder Strap: Included on all 1075 HardBacks

Automatic Purge Valve: Keeps water and dust out while balancing air pressure.

Watertight Gasket: Tight seal created when case is shut.

Mail

All of this is good and well, but let?s return to Pelican?s claim that the ?i1075 HardBack? Case can be used as a portable office.?

Can it or can?t it? Yes, it can!

The case has an ingenious slot toward the back that props the iPad up at a nice viewing angle. This also exposes the Apple Bluetooth keyboard that is inside and allows you to type on it without having to remove the keyboard.

Mail

In other words, you open the case, pull out the iPad, place it into the case at an angle and? start typing. Bam! Just like that you have an instant mobile office.

Safari

The i1075 HardBack case protects your iPad and keyboard from bumps, bruises and it is even waterproof. In all, it is one serious iPad accessory. Yes, it is a bit heavy. And yes, I would love a briefcase-style handle. And yes, as one reader commented when we first brought word of the i1075 HardBack, for many people it will be overkill. But if you travel with your iPad and need to get some serious work done it is a fantastic way to not only carry and protect the device but to make it even more productive. Details can be found here.

MSRP: $84.95 but it is just $69.95 ?in our New Gear Daily Amazon Store. [affiliate link]

What I Like: Amazing protection; Carries everything you need for iPad productivity on the go; Water and rustproof

What Needs Improvement: A bit heavy; No grab handle; May be overkill for many users

(AP) ? Jeffrey Loria watched the news conference from the second row, beaming like a proud parent as Heath Bell talked about his new love for the Miami Marlins and reuniting with Jose Reyes.

Trying to make a quick getaway, the owner was surrounded by reporters in the corridor who wanted to know who else would be migrating to South Florida: Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson, Mark Buehrle?

Instead of trading away their stars, the Marlins have become the biggest player in the offseason market, the riches from their new ballpark a free-agent attraction.

"I want our team to be important," Loria said Monday as the winter meetings opened. "It's an energy city, and I think that's one of the things that brings the players there. They see the energy."

Bell's $27 million, three-year contract was finalized, giving the renamed Marlins an All-Star closer. Reyes' $106 million, six-year deal is a satisfactory physical from conclusion.

Pujols, who already has toured the new ballpark, would join Hanley Ramirez, Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison in the batting order ? if the three-time NL MVP is willing to leave the St. Louis Cardinals, the only major league team he's played for.

"One big hitter?" Loria said out loud, his 2003 World Series ring flashing from his hand. "Well, I don't know about that, but there's a possibility of another player or two we're looking at."

Morrison, among others, was wondering.

"Just out of surgery. Everything went well," he wrote on Twitter after a minor knee operation, adding: "Have we signed Pujols yet??"

On the mound, Wilson or Buehrle could be added to a rotation that includes Josh Johnson (if healthy), Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez and Chris Volstad. While the Marlins are being aggressive, traditional big spenders such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are moving cautiously, both with free agents and in the trade market.

"It's hey, take my older, expensive, over-the-hill guy for your young, better-performing guy," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "Let me think about that and get back to you, buddy."

Not that he's acting any differently with opening day four months away.

"I'm sure my ideas are as distasteful as the ones that I've received," he said.

As the four-day swap session began, the first piece of formal business was the annual meeting of the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee, which elected late Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo. He'll be inducted in Cooperstown on July 22, along with any players elected by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Jan. 9.

Pujols and Prince Fielder are the big bats on the market, and it remains unclear whether Pujols is willing to leave the World Series champions, where he's joined Stan Musial as a franchise icon.

"I always use the word hopeful," Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. "I think it's presumptive to say that I'm optimistic because we obviously have continuing discussions and have a good dialogue going."

No longer watching players like Josh Beckett and Miguel Cabrera getting hooked by other teams, the Marlins now have the bait to attract baseball's best. They drew a major league-low 1.52 million fans to Sun Life Stadium, also home to the NFL's Miami Dolphins, last season. But Loria expects his team will draw 2.5 million to 3 million at the new ballpark.

"When you have a ballpark that seats 78,000, there's no great demand ? and in the middle of nowhere in a football-configured stadium," he said. "But with a ballpark half the size of that and a baseball-only ballpark, you create a different kind of experience and we've seen it in our sales already."

The rest of baseball has taken notice of a team that hopes to overtake Philadelphia and Atlanta in the NL East.

"Good for the Marlins. I'm happy for them, and it's something, of course, I'd like to see happen for us. But in the meantime, you can't cry about it," said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon, whose team along with Oakland are the last two trying to get new ballparks.

Calling Reyes an "exciting young man" and Wilson a "very intelligent and very interesting guy," Loria said he thinks the Marlins can become a consistent winner in their retractable-roof ballpark, not far from downtown Miami.

"With the roster that we have and the things we hope we can do, the outlook is very good," he said. "I'm not going to make any predictions. But we certainly want to be in position to compete seriously."

While the Marlins are poaching, other teams want to retain their stars. Texas may want Wilson back after he helped it come within one strike of the team's first World Series title.

"We basically felt they were going to test the market and we'd circle back to each other," general manager Jon Daniels said.

The Mets, plunging to losing records in all three seasons at Citi Field and plagued by losses from the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme, are cutting payroll from the $140 million range in 2008 and 2009 to about $100 million next year. General manager Sandy Alderson said the team lost $70 million but wouldn't say whether it was all this year.

"When I took the job, my understanding was the payroll was not at a sustainable level, that it would have to come down somewhat," he said. "Perhaps it's had to come down a little more than I would have expected."

Reyes returns to Citi Field when the Marlins visit April 24. He'll be in their new uniforms with garish colors.

"Well, I was a little surprised they had that much money to burn," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a $6 million, two-year contract with utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. and neared an agreement with pitcher Aaron Harang.

Minnesota agreed to a $4.75 million, one-year deal to keep closer Matt Capps, a person familiar with that deal said on condition of anonymity because it had not yet been announced.

Only two PGA documentary nominees on Oscars shortlist (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Reinforcing that the 2011 documentary-awards picture is almost as confusing as the Oscar Best Picture race, the Producers Guild of America nominated five films for its top doc award on Friday -- and only two of the five even made the final 15 in the Oscars doc category.

The five films competing for the PGA's Documentary Theatrical Motion Picture award are "Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest," "Bill Cunningham New York," "Project Nim," "Senna" and "The Union."

Only "Cunningham" and "Nim" made the Academy's shortlist of 15 feature documentaries. None of the five are competing for the top award at Friday night's International Documentary Association Awards, and only "Nim" and "Senna" are in contention for the Cinema Eye Honors' Nonfiction Feature award.

The nominees are notably light on hard-hitting issue-oriented documentaries, and do not include either Steve James' "The Interrupters" or Werner Herzog's "Into the Abyss," both of which drew attention when they were left off the Academy's shortlist.

The winner will be announced on January 21, 2012 at the Producers Guild ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The PGA will announce its television series nominees on December 7 and all other nominees on January 3.

U.S. lawmakers push for better treatment of illegal immigrants in Mexico

Already unhappy with the Obama administration?s handling of illegal immigrants in the U.S., liberal lawmakers on Friday asked the government to go even further and make American aid to Mexico based on that country treating immigrants better.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, Arizona Democrat and a co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, led a letter signed by more than 30 lawmakers, including Foreign Affairs Committee ranking Democrat Howard L. Berman, that accused Mexican authorities of everything from kidnapping and robbery to extortion of migrants crossing Mexico on their way to the U.S.

In the letter the lawmakers asked Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to put pressure on Mexico to clean things up.

?The current levels of abuse against migrants in transit in Mexico represent a humanitarian crisis that has been recognized by international human rights organizations across the globe,? they wrote, adding that because of its location and ties, the U.S. has ?a clear interest and responsibility? to push Mexico.

Mexico has regularly fought for better treatment of its citizens who live illegally in the U.S., but reports have exposed rough treatment by Mexican authorities of Central American migrants who cross Mexico on their way to try to enter the U.S. illegally.

In addition, illegal immigrants are preyed upon by smugglers and sometimes fellow migrants themselves.

One worker at a shelter for illegal immigrants in Mexico told Amnesty International in 2010 that six out of every 10 women and girls who pass through the facility have faced sexual violence.

It?s unclear how many illegal immigrants cross Mexico to try to reach the U.S. The 2010 Amnesty report, citing Mexican government figures, said the number has been declining since 2006 ? just as authorities in the U.S. believe the flow of illegal immigrants across its own border has decreased.

Up until several years, even Mexico pushed for lower penalties for its citizens living illegally in the U.S., Mexican law called for prison sentences of up to 10 years for illegal immigrants there. In 2008 that penalty was reduced to a fine.

Even with illegal immigration numbers leveling off in the U.S., the issue remains a hot topic.

Immigrant-rights groups and liberal members of Congress have called on the Obama administration to halt deportations until a broad new immigration law can be passed to legalize most illegal immigrants.

President Obama has said he doesn?t have the authority to halt all deportations, but earlier this year the administration issued new guidance telling immigration authorities and federal prosecutors not to pursue cases against rank-and-file illegal immigrants who don?t have long criminal records or repeated immigration law violations.

Hispanic members of Congress, including many who signed Friday?s letter, plan to meet with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano next week to ask her about how the new priorities are working.

This past week Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, Illinois Democrat, personally took an illegal immigrant in South Carolina to a meeting with Homeland Security officials in Charleston to ask that he be considered one of the low-priority deportation cases that gets dismissed.

?Successfully appealing for the closure of Mr. Sanchez? case shows people how to fight on other cases in South Carolina and nationally where deporting a father and working man is not in the best interest of our country,? Mr. Gutierrez said.

Weekly Ketchup: Starship Troopers Will Get a Remake

Hollywood made up for lost time during the extended Thanksgiving holiday by returning to "work" and delivering us a healthier helping of movie development news. This week's Ketchup includes news of yet another remake of a Paul Verhoeven science fiction movie, and new (or at least potentially new) roles for Tom Cruise, Michael Fassbender, Harrison Ford, Colin Firth, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Hailee Steinfeld and Rachel Weisz.

This Week's Top Story

STARSHIP TROOPERS BEING REMADE: WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE?

In the 15 years from 1985 to 2000, Dutch director Paul Verhoeven's Hollywood career included seven movies, four of which were science fiction (RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers and Hollow Man). MGM has been developing a remake of RoboCop for a few years now, and Columbia Pictures has already produced a remake of Total Recall (starring Colin Farrell), which is scheduled for release on August 3, 2012. This week, it was revealed that Sony Pictures and producer Neal Moritz are now developing a remake of Verhoeven's 1997 film Starship Troopers as well. Starship Troopers was an adaptation of the 1959 novel of the same title by Robert A. Heinlein, although Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier (who also cowrote RoboCop) also added enough new material to make the film more satirical. Heinlein's novel also didn't include any co-ed shower room nudity. Starship Troopers is just the latest remake project for producer Neal Moritz, who is also developing a remake of Highlander, has Total Recall coming soon, and in the past has produced such remakes as The Fast and the Furious, I Am Legend and Prom Night. The screenwriters that Neal Moritz has hired to start working on the Starship Troopers remake script are Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who have worked together in the past as cowriters of Agent Cody Banks, Thor, X-Men: First Class and several episodes of Fringe and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 WHO KNOWS IF MICHAEL FASSBENDER WILL SAY NO TO NOAH

Christian Bale has been mentioned as the likely star of director Darren Aronofsky's big biblical epic Noah for quite a while. However, Christian Bale has had to recently drop out of Noah due to conflicts with two upcoming projects (Lawless and Knight of Cups) with director Terrence Malick which are both expected to start filming in 2012. The actor that Aronofsky has started talking to and hopes to cast as Noah instead is Michael Fassbender, who recently costarred in X-Men: First Class (as Magneto), and also costars in next year's Prometheus (both for 20th Century Fox). Noah will be a joint production between Paramount Pictures and New Regency Productions (which is based at 20th Century Fox), and filming is expected to start in the spring of 2012.

#2 ALICE EVE THINKS STAR TREK SEQUEL IS NOT OUT OF HER LEAGUE

There are reportedly three major new roles to be introduced in the sequel to J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot of Star Trek. A few weeks ago, we learned that Benicio Del Toro had been cast as the film's main villain, and one of the other new roles is reportedly possibly a villain as well. What that leaves is a mysterious new female character, and this week it was Alice Eve who landed that part. Alice Eve is probably best known for starring in She's Out of My League, but she also costarred in Sex and the City 2, and the last season of Entourage. Eve reportedly won the role through auditioning, beating out both Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger). Although Eve's character is described as being new to the franchise, that hasn't stopped many fans from guessing (mostly based on her appearance) that she could actually be the reboot universe's Nurse Chapel, or possibly Dr. Carol Marcus (from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan). It's worth noting that we also don't yet know who Benicio Del Toro is playing, even though many fans suspect it's Khan Noonien Singh. Paramount and J.J. Abrams plan on starting filming of the Star Trek sequel on January 15, 2012, so that mysterious third character should also be cast soon.

#3 TOM HANKS MEETS THE NAZIS AGAIN IN THE GARDEN OF BEASTS

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the non-fiction novel In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson (The Devil in the White City) for Tom Hanks to produce, and possibly/probably star in as well. In the Garden of Beasts tells the true story of William E. Dodd, the American professor who was chosen by FDR to become America's first ambassador to Nazi Germany in 1933. Dr. Dodd travelled to Berlin with his 24 year old daughter Martha, and the two had experiences that began quite differently, but ultimately led to the same opinion of what was really going on under Hitler in the 1930s. There is not yet any screenwriter attached to adapt Larson's book, and so it is likely to join The Devil in the White City in a development track that will last at least a few years.

#4 COLIN FIRTH IS THE RAILWAY MAN, A STEEL DRIVING MAN

Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz are set to star in the international production The Railway Man, based upon a best selling autobiography by Eric Lomax. Eric Lomax was a British officer during World War II who was captured by the Japanese, and forced to work on the Burma-Siam railroad (the subject of The Bridge Over the River Kwai). Lomax was also tortured and treated brutally for his attempts to build a radio. Decades later, Lomax sought reconciliation with one of his former torturers at the site of The Bridge Over the River Kwai, which became the focus of the 1995 documentary film Enemy My Friend. Colin Firth will play Eric Lomax in his post-war years, Rachel Weisz will play his wife Patti, and Jeremy Irvine (the star of War Horse) will play Eric Lomax during the World War II scenes. The Railway Man will be directed by Jonathan Teplitzsky (Better than Sex, Gettin' Square) from a script by Frank Cottrell Boyce (Hilary and Jackie, Millions, 24 Hour Party People) and Andy Paterson (one of the film's producers, making his screenwriting debut). Filming of The Railway Man is scheduled to start in February, 2012 at locations in Australia, the U.K. and Thailand.

#5 UNHOLY NIGHT CONTINUES THE WACKY HORROR MASH-UP MINI-GENRE

Author Seth Grahame-Smith is synonymous with the "horror/classics mash up" genre of fiction, mostly because he is nearly the only one writer writing it so exclusively. Grahame-Smith's books also have the distinction of being quickly picked up for movie adaptations consistently. First there was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (though that one remains mired in development hell), and the second book was Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter (which has been produced and is scheduled for a 6/22/12 release). Grahame-Smith's third mash-up novel will be called Unholy Night, and as the title suggests, it will take on the Nativity story of the Three Wise Men. Except, of course, Unholy Night will also somehow include monsters, or something. The "something" isn't yet known, because the book doesn't come out until April, 2012. Regardless, Warner Bros has acquired the rights to Unholy Night, which makes it the third project that Warner Bros is currently developing with ties to the Bible, even if Unholy Night is obviously not entirely serious about adapting its source material 100% faithfully. The other two Biblical projects in development at Warner Bros are a Moses biopic called Gods and Kings and Mel Gibson and Joe Eszterhas' planned biopic of Hebrew revolutionary Judah Maccabee (whose tale inspired the modern holiday of Hanukkah).

#6 TOM CRUISE SHOULD CHECK HIS GRAMMAR IF HE THINKS ALL YOU NEED IS KILL

All You Need is Kill is the title of a Japanese science fiction novel by Yoshitoshi Abe that has been in development as a live action adaptation at Warner Bros since 2010. Although the studio was at one time considering a younger star, Brad Pitt was later mentioned as possibly starring, followed by rumors of Tom Cruise. This week, Tom Cruise did indeed officially sign on to star in All You Need is Kill, which will be directed by Doug Liman (Jumper, The Bourne Identity, Mr & Mrs Smith). All You Need is Kill is a futuristic war movie with a premise a lot like Groundhog Day. Tom Cruise will play a soldier who keeps living his final battle over and over, but with each death, he also improves at killing his alien enemies. All You Need is Kill also represents a new focus on science fiction for Tom Cruise, as the star is also attached to star in Oblivion for director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy).

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#3 HAILEE STEINFELD AND HARRISON FORD MAY ALSO PLAY ENDER'S GAME

Now that Asa Butterfield, the 14 year old star of Hugo, has signed on with Summit Entertainment to star in the long-in-development adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, the casting process is now moving on to other characters. First up is Colonel Hyrum Graff, the commander of the Battle School that has been established to train children to fight in an outer space war against an alien race called the Formics. Although nothing is official yet, the star that Summit is reportedly hoping to land for the part is none other than Harrison Ford, who only recently returned to the outer space science fiction genre with Cowboys & Aliens after hanging up his Han Solo vest years ago. Another major character in Ender's Game (and especially later novels like Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets) is Petra Arkanian, one of the female students at the Battle School. Hailee Steinfeld, the young actress who first came to attention in True Grit, is currently in negotations for that role. Ender's Game will be directed by Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) from his own adaptation of Card's novel.

#2 AT LEAST CALIFORNIANS WHO SEE SAN ANDREAS: 3D WILL KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT

New Line Cinema is currently looking for a director to sign on for San Andreas 3D, a disaster movie about the long-expected "big one" earthquake forecast to someday wreak havoc on the state of California. San Andreas 3D has already been written by screenwriter Allan Loeb, whose last four produced movies all received "Rotten" scores on the RT Tomatometer: 21 (35%), Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (54%), The Switch (51%) and Just Go With It (20%). The premise of San Andreas revolves around a man who has to drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco "to reconcile with his children and his estranged wife, who's moved away and taken up with another man." If that sounds very familiar, then you most likely saw 2012, which featured almost exactly the same premise for the John Cusack character.

#1 JULIA ROBERTS DISAGREES WITH F. SCOTT FITZGERALD ABOUT SECOND ACT

Julia Roberts has come aboard a New Regency comedy called Second Act, which she will produce and also star in. Although Second Act does not yet have a director or even a screenwriter, the workplace comedy is described as being about "a woman who has never worked and is forced to take a job." This byline makes Second Act seem a bit like the sort of movie that Goldie Hawn used to specialize in, such as Private Benjamin, Protocol, Swing Shift and Overboard. Second Act is this week's Rotten Idea based mostly on the sheer lack of information, and the rather flimsy concept which also seems a bit too obviously designed to be a "Recession Era comedy."

Shopycat Recommends Gifts for Your Facebook Friends [Gift Ideas]

Shopycat Recommends Gifts for Your Facebook FriendsFinding the right gift isn't always easy, but new Facebook app Shopycat can take advantage of what your friends say they like and offer up suggestions for what to buy. It's like your little elf assistant on Facebook.

Whether you're a big Facebook user or not, the app is pretty handy because of the personalized gift recommendations based on stuff your Facebook friends "like," their status updates, and interests in their profiles. Shopycat matches those interests and likes with product catalogs from Wal-Mart (the app was developed by the big box retailer), Barnes & Noble, RedEnvelope, and other retailers.

Shopycat thought Jason Chen would like a poker video game (since he likes both poker and games), Adam Pash a laptop sleeve (because it's practical yet slick), and Whitson would like a Snuggie with a tattoo design (I seriously hope that is a Shopycat joke). I'll have to check back with them later to see if those are good gifts. For me, the app recommended the Lifehacker: The Guide to Working Smarter, Faster, and Better book. Very astute.

Pope seeks end to death penalty (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI voiced support Wednesday for political actions around the world aimed at eliminating the death penalty, reflecting his stance as an opponent of capital punishment.

He made the comments during his weekly public audience to participants at a meeting being promoted by the Catholic Sant'Egidio Community on the theme "No Justice without Life."

He said he hopes "your deliberations will encourage the political and legislative initiatives being promoted in a growing number of countries to eliminate the death penalty."

Benedict, like his predecessor Pope John Paul II, has appealed for commutation in a number of death penalty cases, many in the United States.

In the late 1990s, the Roman Catholic church hardened its opposition to the death penalty in a revised statement of its teaching. It said the death penalty is permissible only in the narrowest of circumstances, and only when there is no other way to protect the public.
